Organisation
- Young local volunteer organisation established in 1999 and fast growing
- Run by group of young enthusiastic Indonesian volunteers
- Active in the field of education, social work, arts, agriculture, environment and construction
- Organizes both short term volunteer work camps and medium-long term placements
- Work area: central Java, Semarang and surroundings
- Emphasis on friendship, understanding and cultural exchange among Indonesian and foreign volunteers
- Own initiative and creativity are important: define best teaching approach depending on work environment
Project activities
- Teaching English to local students, orphans, disabled people / children of totally 20 different locations
- Teaching opportunities at various locations: universities, schools (disabled children) and orphanages / child games or handicrafts, etc.
- Possibility to combine English teaching with assisting with organisation of other activities like seminars, short term volunteer camp, exhibitions, etc.
What’s expected of the volunteers?
- Enthusiastic, open-minded, active, own initiative, creativity, flexible
- Respectful of Indonesian culture(s) and religions
- Good English language skills (for university teaching)
Accommodation and living environment
- Usually family home stay or room at school/orphanage
- Basic simple living conditions
- A lot of opportunities for interaction with local people, learning Indonesian culture and language
- Cooking varies, it can be that you have to cook for yourself, that you can eat with the guest family or that it is otherwise taken care of
Period / duration
- Minimum 2 or 3 months stay, depending on project location
- Up to 6 months, 9 months or 1 year potentially, limited by visa formalities
- When to go: any time after completion of SIW selection & preparation cycle, held twice a year (March à May & September à November)
Local costs
- To be paid to the local organization (includes food & accommodation): approx. $100,- per month
