Organization

The organization is a non-profit school with over 200 students in a village with over 40,000 inhabitants at about 15 km. of  San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The organization actively engages in offering good bilingual education to children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods. With a good knowledge of the English language and education in practical applicable knowledge, these students are well prepared at a possible further study, and do they have a chance at a better future and less poverty. There are also students who can provide a financial contribution (to capacity). Thus a better interaction, understanding and tolerance between the different social groups is stimulated.

Project activities

• To teach from kindergarten up to group 8 in English, maths, biology and the expressive subjects.
• Class assistant, the guidance of students who were expelled from class

What’s expected of the volunteers?

• As a volunteer you can teach very well in the English language.
• You’re at least 21 years of age
• You have an excellent knowledge of Spanish

• Affinity in dealing with children

Accommodation and living environment

• Two large dwelling places have been built for the volunteers. Here you have your own room and some rooms have their own bath room. Both dwellings have a roof terrace to relax and are enclosed by walls for safety. The school is located at the edge of the village at a 10 min. walk. Board and lodging are included in the volunteers fee.
• You pay $100 for the first 4 weeks and thereafter $75 for the rest of your stay.

Period / duration

• Throughout the year, though the school is closed from half way June until the third week of August; the Christmas holidays; last week of December and first weeks of January.
• Minimum of 3 months
• Class times are between 07.15 and 14.30 hrs. You work 5 days a week with an average of 5 teaching hours (out of 8).
• If you stay longer than 3 months at the volunteer house, than board and lodging are for free!

Local costs

• To be paid to the local organization (includes food & accommodation): approx. $100,- per month

“Teaching goes better every time, in the first week I was afraid to lose my voice, I had to shout that hard. But now it goes better, or I am used to the kids, and they to me. In the morning I still help with the tiny prep children. That’s a full schedule, in the morning 2 hours at the prep and then 4 hours at 2nd Grade. But I enjoy it!”
