• Participate in farming and life skill improvement in communal areas within villages. • Sensitizing the communities on good farming and life skill for youth to address level of poverty. • Planting crops in school farms, church farms and UPA farms. • Participate in training on how modern farming to members • Visit by participants to big farmers in the district and share with them their experiences. • A mini seminar will be organized in 2 places in community and participants share their own experience about modern farming and life skill training in their respective regions /countries.
Accommodation: • Accommodation shall be at a basic UPA structure/building • Participants will be required to carry own sleeping bags and mats • The campsite has simple outside bathrooms with no showers • The campsite has latrines not toilets • And a simple cooking shelter (kitchen) with energy saving fireplace Food: • There are several local foods to choose from e.g. matooke, cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, pumpkin and also rice, spaghetti, ground nuts, beans, peas and different types green vegetables • Fruits can also be easily bought from local markets, mangoes, sweet bananas, water melon, pineapples etc • Participants will choose food to prepare depending on the availability. • Participants will divide themselves in working groups to prepare own meals using charcoal and firewood on a fuel saving place.
• Former internally displaced people’s camps and resettlement sites to have a discussion on their coping mechanism. • Visiting fort Baker and former slave trade route and collection centers, Kabalega Hide out during the British invasion in the late 18th century. • Visiting various recreation centre and places of interest in and around Gulu. NB: • Cultural Nights will be organized on different days for the different countries represented at the workcamp. Please carry along anything that can introduce your culture. Note: Some places to be visited may be at a small fee for interested participants.
Uganda Pioneers´ Association (UPA) is an indigenous youth voluntary Non-Government Organization (NGO) registered with the National NGO Bureau in Uganda, under ref No. S5914/114. The organization focuses on offering youths with the opportunity to contribute to community development by involving them in community projects through workcamps and international volunteer exchanges. The organisation is Not-for-Profit and does not represent any political, religious or sectarian motives.
Participants shall be required to bring own sleeping bag, mat, pillow, mosquito net, sun cream, mosquito repellent, working gloves and boots/shoes. Light working clothes during working hours and warm clothes for nights, as it may turn out to be chilly or cold; Musical instrument (optional); torch or flash light; water purifiers (optional); Personal effects (i.e. soap, toothpaste, toiletries). It would be nice if you can bring your national flag, common art facts of your country, stories, games, pictures and local recipes. It would be helpful for the cultural presentations about your country and for any social interactions. Above all do not forget a happy and positive attitude. NB: Very short skirts, dresses and shorts (above the knee) will not be culturally welcomed.
Visa: The volunteers must apply for a tourist visa online with this link. . This should be done a couple of weeks or months before the departure date. The form requires you to fill in the address of the contact person in Uganda and you should use: ZZIWA SAMUEL MUSANYUSA, NANSANA WEST I ZONE, +256785601220. The immigration department sends you an approval document which you must print and present on arrival at the airport. The tourist visa costs 50 US $ and it is better to carry it in cash Participation fee: 250 € for international participants (this includes pick-up from the airport, food and accommodation during the stay in the camp and the on-arrival orientation). It also contributes to the running of the workcamp activities and UPA administration. Note: UPA doesn’t offer airport drop off after the workcamp but can help in identifying the service provider and the volunteer meets the costs ranging between 28-30 Euros.
