Project Activities: Volunteers are expected to participate in the following outlined activities for the duration of this project:- • Mangrove trees planting: Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. Despite these benefits there has been destruction of mangrove forests and harvesting practices which are not sustainable. • Environmental cleaning and waste management: Participating in community clean ups events and managing the waste in the community. This will be developing waste sites and demonstration on how to separate garbage. • Environmental education: Sensitization of environment care as a means of maintaining peace and security. This will be done through creative means including sports, arts, music and exhibitions.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in communal house in the community. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share rooms with or other volunteers from the same or other projects. (No mix of different sex in the rooms). Volunteers’ relatives and friends can visit or staying over upon special approval. Bring with you; Mosquito net, Bed sheets (at least 2 pieces) and pillow if you prefer one, Towels, Rubber mattress and Mosquito repellent. Food: Trying a variety of foods from other cultures is part of UVIKIUTA’s philosophy for an authentic experience in Tanzania, and may be both fun and challenging. Food on our projects generally reflects the local cuisine. Some foods that are part of a regular diet at your home country may not be available during the program. Vegetarians will be accommodated. However volunteers with more specific dietary requirements may need to supplement the included meals at their own expense. Participants with food allergies (e.g., nuts) must inform the organisation about the existence and severity of the allergy. Three meals per day are provided to the Volunteers at the accommodation. Meals in transit between airports and to/from Project, during tourism or outside designated project area are volunteer’s responsibility. No reimbursements will be made for volunteers who miss their included meals.
Pemba Island famous known as “spice Island” is gifted with various natural attractions. Before coming to Tanzania, you will have an opportunity to learn more about this beautiful Island; however there are four important sites or activities you may not want to miss at all:- • Ngezi Forest, and Vumawimbi beach • Misali Island and Cloves farms. • Note: Be aware of people trying to invite you for safari and tours, they might not help that much as most of them are not licensed or registered for such kind of business. It is always cheaper and even fun to do these activities with other participants as a team. You might want to wait until the orientation day to plan together. If needed we can provide some recommendations for companies which has been providing services to our Previous participants over the years with affordable rates while quality, safety and security prioritized.
Description of the Project: Climate change is one of the most general threats to peace and security worldwide at the least at this moment. However it has been obvious that not many people would list this as a key factor in international relations and domestic welfare. Climate change touches all areas of security, peace building, and sustainable development. The impacts of climate change are already adversely affecting vulnerable communities, as well as stretching the capacities of societies and Governments. Climate change is best understood as a ‘threat multiplier’, i.e. something that interacts with existing pressures (such as social conflict, economic inequality, large-scale migration, or competition for resources) and further compounds these issues—increasing the likelihood of instability or violent conflict. Peace & Climate change project is aiming to increase awareness and make contribution to the projects that support environmental sustainability.
• This project is suitable for a person who is open minded, flexible, ready to learn and adopt to other cultures, interested in physical/outdoor activities, nature, environment, Peace ability to work under less supervision and minimum resources. • No flexibility on starting and ending date.
You are expected to pay a program participation fee of €250. Participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, cost of transport to the community (From you home to Pemba Island and return), Business visas fee, airport drop off on departure day, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses.
