Project Activities Volunteers are expected to participate in the following specified activities:- • Mangrove trees planting: Planting Mangroves will protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. • Environmental cleaning and waste management: Participating in community clean ups events and managing the waste in the community. This will include development of demonstration on how to separate garbage. • Sustainable living awareness: Sensitization of environment care as a means of sustainable living . This will be done using creative means including sports, arts, music and exhibitions.
Accommodation Volunteers will be hosted in communal house in the community. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share rooms with or other volunteers from the same or other projects. (No mix of different sex in the rooms). Volunteers’ relatives and friends can visit or staying over upon special approval. Bring with you; Mosquito net, Bed sheets (at least 2 pieces) and pillow if you prefer one, Towels, Rubber mattress and Mosquito repellent. Food Trying a variety of foods from other cultures is part of UVIKIUTA’s philosophy for an authentic experience in Tanzania, and may be both fun and challenging. Food on our projects generally reflects the local cuisine. Some foods that are part of a regular diet at your home country may not be available during the program. Vegetarians can be accommodated. However volunteers with more specific dietary requirements may need to supplement the included meals at their own expense. Participants with food allergies (e.g., nuts) must inform the organisation about the existence and severity of the allergy. Three meals per day are provided to the Volunteers at the accommodation. Meals in transit between airports and to/from Project, during tourism or outside designated project area are volunteer’s responsibility. No reimbursements will be made for volunteers who miss their included meals.
Location Uzi is a small island in the south of Zanzibar’s main island Unguja. Little has changed in Uzi during the last centuries. Most of the island's 5000 people are fishermen and farmers. The island is located in the Menai Bay Conservation Area which forms an important ecosystem of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, islands with fresh water forest, coral reefs and a large diversity of plants, land and water animals, including dolphins, African Sea Eagles, and protected marine turtles. Leisure activities • Exploring Zanzibar historical, natural and cultural sites. These include museums, local markets, stone town, etc. • Enjoy wildlife and marine life. Jozani forest National Park, Blue safaris swimming, tour to small islands, variety of water sports, spice tour among many other options. • Note: Be aware of people trying to invite you for safari and tours, they might not help that much as most of them are not licensed or registered for such kind of business. It is always cheaper and even fun to do these activities with other participants as a team. You might want to wait until the orientation day to plan together. If needed we can provide some recommendations for companies which has been providing services to our Previous participants over the years with affordable rates while quality, safety and security prioritized.
Description of the Project In Tanzania as other countries around the world, sustainable living is a hot topic. Many people may have heard about sustainable living and are not sure exactly what it means. Lack of knowledge and exposure has significantly increase lifestyles that cause more environmental damage for future generations to deal with. Sustainable living applies to almost every part of daily life hence there is an importance to be addressed. Sustainable living project is an initiative that is aiming to address challenges to attain sustainable development in Uzi Village. Members of this village are united by shared socio – economic and cultural spiritual values. However some threats to sustainability have been poor mangrove forest management, sustainable fishing, farming and diversification of livelihood opportunities to attain sustainable living.
This project is suitable for a person who is open minded, flexible, ready to learn and adopt to other cultures, interested in physical/outdoor activities, Nature, environment and with ability to work independently, under less supervision and minimum resources.
Volunteers are advised to avoid tourist/holiday visas since it does not work for this kind of program in Tanzania. Business visa is suitable for the program and it can be easily obtained at the airport or other boarder entry on arrival. The visa is valid for 90 days and it cannot be extended.
