i) Building renovation: Volunteers will be engaged in renovation of the building which is proposed to be a day care/Nursery school classroom to allow children from the community to access early childhood education. Volunteers will also draw symbols in the walls to allow easy learning.
ii) Playground development: Volunteers will be engaged in preparing and building structures for children to play during the school hours and after school
iii) Compound beautification: A well-maintained kids/ nursery school provides a safe and attractive learning environment for children. School compound beautification, however, can offer much more than physical improvements to the school buildings and grounds. Through cleaning and painting the outside and inside of the school and by planting new flowers and shrubs, the students can take advantage of educational, personal development and community building opportunities.
iv) Garbage separation and composting: Working on garbage collection and separation as well creating demo sites for garbage disposal/separation and compositing site.
v) Working with Children: Volunteers will be responsible to organize after school activities for children from the age of 7-14. This could be sports, arts, music, crafts, games and academic development.
Note: Please bring with you working cloth and shoes for dirty painting work.
i. Type of accommodation
Volunteers will be hosted in a school building. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share room with or other volunteers. There is no beds, however mattresses will be laid down.
ii. What you should bring for your accommodation (Very important)
• Mosquito net
• 2 pieces of bed sheet
• 1 Piece of bed cover
• Pillow and pillow case if you prefer one
• Towels, Rubber mattress
• Mosquito repellent that suits your skin
iii. Toiletries: Non-scented items are best because they do not attract insects. Zip-lock bags; Soap and shampoo; Sunscreen; Toothbrush and toothpaste; Comb and /or brush; Nail clippers; For women: sanitary napkins or tampons; For men: razor, shaving cream and blades;
iv. Health / Personal First aid kit: Best to store in strong, plastic bag and to keep dry and clean. Small supply of: disinfectant, Band-Aids, gauze and adhesive tape, calamine lotion, insect repellent, throat lozenges, pain killer, anti-acid, extra pair of prescription glasses, if available, and any on-going medication.
i. Trying a variety of foods from other cultures is part of UVIKIUTA’s philosophy for an authentic experience in Tanzania, and may be both fun and challenging. Food on our projects generally reflects the local cuisine. Some foods that are part of a regular diet at your home country may not be available during the project.
ii. Vegetarians are accommodated and veg meals will be available. However volunteers with more specific dietary requirements may need to supplement the included meals at their own expense.
iii. Participants with food allergies (e.g., nuts) must inform us about the existence and severity of the allergy.
iv. Three meals per day are provided to the Volunteers at the accommodation.
v. Meals on transit between airports and to/from Project, during tourism/Free time activities or outside designated project area are volunteer’s responsibility.
vi. No reimbursements will be made for volunteers who miss their included meals.
vii. We will have permanent support staff to help in the kitchen. However Volunteers are expected to give hand in meals preparations, dish washing, kitchen and dining room cleaning.
viii. Clean water will be provided. We will not pay for bottled water if is going to be your preference. Please bring water bottle with you.
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays will be free for volunteers to do their personal activities including exploring what the region offer in terms of cultural and natural attractions. Possibilities are:-
i) Exploring Zanzibar historical, natural and cultural sites. These include museums, local markets, stone town etc. Enjoy wildlife and marine life. Jozani forest National Park, Blue safaris swimming, tour to small islands, variety of water sports, spice tour among many other options.
ii) Near Dar es Salam possibilities could be; wildlife safari trips, Marine excursions (Mingoyo Islands) eco and cultural tourism activities, Bagamoyo or Kilwa, Dar es Salaam tour (Beach, Museums, and Markets).
THE PROJECT: It has been proved that, Children spend more time in School than home. Based on this fact, school environment need to be Child friendly. One of the factor which has been noted to be considered is environmental health and ecological sustainability of schools. The project is aiming to “catalyze and support ‘green’ actions by kids, teachers, parents, and policymakers” with the goals of eliminating toxics, using resources sustainably, creating green spaces and buildings, serving healthy food, and teaching stewardship.
