In Togo, first aid training is almost non-existent in the professional and educational sectors. As a result, a large number of citizens ignore the elementary gestures to rescue people who are victims of a road accident or an incident affecting the physical body. It is faced with this observation that ASTOVOT has been initiating a few years ago, more specifically in the summer in the town of Kpalimé, a training and awareness-raising project on "life-saving gestures". The aim of this international workcamp is to invite people to react in a real situation, facing an event involving one or more victims. Several modules are given during the training : emergency release of an injured person, putting in a waiting position for people who need it, placing a tourniquet or compression on a wound, care after burns, alerting the emergency services, release airway obstructions, massage, etc. namely the basic concepts of first aid. This summer's training is intended more particularly to school and secondary teachers, staff of partner orphanages, unions of motorcycle taxi drivers (commonly called "Zémidjan") and the public in general. At the end of the training, the beneficiaries will be able not only to have reactions adapted to first aid but also to apply the necessary measures to prevent, limit or eliminate an imminent danger in an incident, and also to alert the emergency services. The project is supported each year by a team from the National Federation of Civil Protection of Togo (FNPC). PROJECT OBJECTIVES  Main objective To contribute to the acquisition of basic first aid knowledge by the communities through several modules provided, namely teachers, staff of partner orphanages and unions of motorcycle taxi drivers commonly called "Zémidjan".  Specific objectives - To promote the values of solidarity and first aid between citizens through learning first aid gestures. - To create a net of trainers on first aid measures among the volunteers, in order they can spread the techniques learned. - To raise awarness of the population about the importance of a quick, safe and efective first aid action. - To adapt first aid techniques and teachings to the togolese specificities, in order to improve people's learning and make it sustainable. MAIN ACTIVITIES Volunteers without knowledge of first aid will initially benefit from basic training before training the people targeted by the project. Then the team of volunteers will put in place a very detailed program to provide first aid to the beneficiaries.  The training will be based on the reactions and actions to be adopted in the following situations : choking, bleeding, unconsciousness , cardiac arrest (first aid and defibrillation) , cardiac malaise.  The broad outlines of the training are : securing the accident site and the people involved, assessment of the victim's condition , request for help , providing first aid. Activities to be organized on the project: - Inventory of needs (materials needed for training, logistics, etc.) and preparation of modules. - Training of trainers. - First contact with targets and choice of training locations. - Visibility and awareness of the project through community radio stations. - Preparation of the training schedule. - Implementation of the training. - Evaluation.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

ACCOMODATION Housing conditions are generally rudimentary, simple and specific to the location of the project. On site, volunteers are accommodated in groups of three or four people per room. The distribution per room depends on the collective organization of the volunteers themselves. Depending on the location, volunteers can use dry toilets and showers without tap water. The association available to volunteers some plastic or foam mats. Volunteers can bring sleeping bags with them if possible. There is access to drinking water on the site. However, access to electricity and the internet may be limited. This is due respectively to the blackouts and the difficulties of accessing the Internet. FOOD During the entire period of the workcamp, it is the volunteers themselves who prepare their own meals. An internal organization will make it possible to create groups which will alternate to take care of the different household tasks including cooking. Food products used for cooking are both imported and local, and sometimes organic. The diet of each volunteer will be taken into account in the preparation of meals. Volunteers will have access to tropical fruits such as bananas, oranges, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, papayas, etc.

Locatie en vrije tijd

In addition to the main activities of the site, several other activities are organized such as discovery walks, hikes, parties or cultural meetings. These activities allow volunteers to get in touch with local populations but also to discover Togolese culture. During the weekends, collective excursions are organized by the volunteers and their leaders to discover the tourist sites of the region where the workcamp is taking place. It should be noted that expenses related to excursions and outings of volunteers are not included in the participation fees. However, the association can facilitate or negotiate transport for volunteers during outings or excursions.

This project requires a great involvement from the volunteers because there is a permanent mobilization of the public around the activities. The volunteers must have a real interest in the themes of interculturality and solidarity.
