First weeks we are working with village youths to establish a plant nursery at village temple premises. After that we are visiting village to meet family and members of self help women's group, youths etc.
Village house, located at nice location, between water stream and a paddy land. There's electricity, you can charge your mobile and cameras. Some mobile services are working here but internet is not strong. Host family cook for you and you can enjoy different kind of local food with fruits. Volunteers should wash your plates and cups after using. Your cloths can be washed by hand and hang at backyard to dry. Let's enjoy simple life without modern technologies.
Deniyaya is 200 kilo meters away from Colombo-the capital of Sri Lanka. It consists of rural villages and plantations and situated in the deepest corner of the down South close to Singharaga Rain Forest, the world heritage and tourist destination bordering to Sabaragamuwa Province. The climate is cold and most of the British planters had occupied in Deniyaya area during the colonial period, yet remaining English sign boards such as Beverly, Hanford, Down Side, Morning Side, Hayes ,Upton etc., as British ruins.
This workcamp has been organized with Green Volunteers for Green Future (GV4GF) since 2012. GV4GF is NPO that promote voluntary service, while protecting environment based on cultural exchange to improve rural lives in area. GV4GF's first project with Low Country CBO Consortium and this is another great experience to local people as well as the organizations. Most of the community are less educated in this area due to the lack of educational facilities and the youths possess less privileges due to the remoteness comparing to urban youths. No fair resource allocation (FRA) by the authorities on this circumstances. Most of the GO/NGOs agencies do not intend to attend or implement programs in this area due to less facilities, damaged roads, unavailability of luxuries food and accommodation facilities for them. According to the statistic analysis, most of the community are rural and plantation poors beyond the poverty line. But, there are ample natural resources that can be used to enhance their livelihood. They have no proper guidance to change the distinctive attitudes. No opportunity to share knowledge and experience. The most importance thing is to lead them to the target Goal.
other activities: We can visit nearby temple, visit to meet Sri Lanka's aboriginal people, some other attractive points located around the area.
