Global summer course in Sri Lanka Join us on a trip to Sri Lanka and get an insight into the society, culture and the conditions and opportunities for Sri Lankan youth. This course in Sri Lanka offers a combination of fun, learning and amazing experiences. Together with the other global course participants you will experience the green nature and the white sandy beaches which Sri Lanka amongst many other things is known for. We will live nearby Kandy, which is located in the highlands on the middle of the island. However, we will go on trips around the country in order to experience the different parts of the society. Interesting and inspiring classes During the summer course you will learn about different aspects of being young in the Sri Lankan society. We will talk about religion and spirituality, and we will visit a temple in Kandy. You will also learn about women’s rights, the education system and UN’s sustainable development goals in a Sri Lankan context. We will also take a closer look at what lies behind the beautiful green landscapes when we visit a tea plantation and learn about the tea production which has played an important role in Sri Lanka’s history and today is important for the economy of Sri Lanka. Through the various themes and excursions, you will gain an understanding and unique insight into the Sri Lankan society. Cross-cultural experiences An important part of the course is the cultural meeting and the meeting with Sri Lanka youth. We will have two full days together with a group of young Sri Lankans who will join us for discussions on some of the challenges and opportunities for young people in Sri Lanka and the countries represented by the participants in the course. Through conversations and discussions, we will gain an insight into what it is like to be young in Sri Lanka. What hopes and dreams for the future do young people have in Sri Lanka? You might also learn something about your own life as a young person by sharing experiences with Sri Lankan youth. We will also visit a local school where we will meet with the students. We might also get time for a football match with the students at the school! You will have lots of interesting experiences during your stay in Sri Lanka. We will go on several excursions during the programme. One example is when we will go by train for an overnight trip to the town Ella. The train ride is known for its stunning views, and when we arrive to Ella we will go on a hike to Ella Rock. We will also go the southern coast where we will visit the town Mirissa. Here we will learn about the local environment while we help cleaning the local beach. However, we will also have time for swimming, relaxing and spending time together on the beach. The programme The trainers at the course have put together an interesting programme for us. We will both spend time at the training centre in Kandy, where we will learn about culture and society in Sri Lanka. However, we will also go on excursions to the surrounding area to experience more of the country. We have aimed to ensure that we will not spent all of our time at the training centre, but that we get to travel around in the country to experience the things discussed in the class room in real life. Every morning we will start the day with a re-cap of the previous day. This is in order to provide time for reflection and discussion of the things we experience. Our trainers at the course are from Sri Lanka. This means they are experts in the culture and society and will help us getting a good understanding of life for young people and the Sri Lankan society more generally. Highlights from the programme The course will start with an introduction on the 5th of June where you will participate via skype. Here you will get prepared for your stay in Sri Lanka. Week 1: Culture and society - Introduction to Sri Lanka: historically, politically and culturally - Guided tour around Kandy - Introduction to and discussion of the UN Sustainable Development Goals - Visit to a tea plantation where we will help in the field - Introduction to and discussion of gender and feminism - Religion and spirituality in Sri Lanka - Meditation and yoga - Work with forum theatre with Sri Lankan youth Week 2: Environment and education - Train ride to Ella, where we will explore the Sri Lankan landscape - Excursion to Mirissa, where we will help cleaning the beach - Focus on climate and environment - Visit to a school and meeting the students - Visit to religious sights in Kandy - Fun, movies and much more! I have worked for several years in various youth organisations, both in Sri Lanka and internationally. I am very interested in human rights and voluntarism – and then I love to play football! Travel guide A travel guide from MS Denmark will join the group throughout the course. The travel guide will be there, if you have any questions or concerns about any practicalities during the course.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be staying at the training centre about 20 minutes outside of Kandy on a hill in beautiful green surroundings. You will be sharing a room with fellow course participants in dorm-like facilities. There is a common area where we will have all our meals and where you are free to spend time after the activities of the day. We also have a big green garden and a terrace at the training centre where you can relax. We will have all meals together during the course. We will have local Sri Lankan food prepared at the training centre, and sometimes we might even be invited to help with the cooking!

Locatie en vrije tijd

During the afternoons and evenings, after the program of the day, you can relax at the training centre with the other participants on the course. You will have lots of time to play cards on the terrace or relax in the garden. Some afternoons it will be possible to visit a nearby swimming pool where we can cool down after the activities of the day. During our visit to the beach in Mirissa, you will also have the opportunity to go whale watching or try surfing. However, it is not part of the programme, so you would need to pay a bit extra for this. You can expect this to be around 20-30 euros for each of the activities, and you don’t have to decide beforehand, if you would like to join any of these activities.

The extra fee of the camp includes: - Accommodation and food all days (three meals a day) - Induction course the 5th of June (on Skype) - All workshops, excursions and project visits as planned in the program - All local transportation - Local trainer following the group during the whole program - Access to 24 hours emergency phone. Please don’t buy any flight tickets or travel insurance etc. before your participation is confirmed by us. Please note that it is of your own responsibility to buy a suitable travel insurance.
