You will be working together with the expert services for forest and environmental protection in the Alb-Donau district. Your job is to care for and rebuild a wetland habitat (pond and water streams), maintenance of juniper heath and poor grasslands close to the Mochental. You will cut the pond free, possibly repair the dam and remove rampant creeping plants from the pond so animals and plants can spread. The juniper heaps spread here in the past through sheep and goat farming and are one of the most biodiverse of dentral Europe and mostly under protection. They are in danger of being overgrown. You will remove bushes and trees, in order to make room and light for the rare plant species, insects and birds living there. You will be instructed by a forest ranger, a forester and a forester trainee.
You will stay in group rooms with camp beds on the premise of Schloss Mochental with a kitchen and a recreation room. You will cook together.
You will stay in a rather remote area, where you can sit by the campfire in the evenings. You can take trips in the area (35km radius) f.e. to the biosphere region Schwäbische Alb, visit Ehingen, a city famous for its beer culture, explore the cave in Laiching and the climbing forest, take canoe trips on the Große Lauter, visit the open air museum in Kürnbach or visit the world-famous Ulmer Münster. In the wider surroundings you can visit (up to about 150 km) the Bodensee, Stuttgart or Augsburg.
You have to be able to cycle. The work can be physically demanding. You will stay in a forest base about 10km south-west of Ehingen (Donau). The nearest train station is about 5km away by bicycle. There is no wlan and the data connection to mobile networks is not always reliable.
