Activities, coordinated by a local educator and discussed between staff and volunteers, can concern: – Support in the educational activities (scholastic support, personal hygiene, respect for the environment) – Theatre/Music/painting activities – Recreational activities for the youngsters – Organization of some sport events/competitions The volunteers will also be involved in manual tasks to improve the structure of the Educational Center Pinocchio (for example, painting of doors or windows) or of the House of Volunteers.
All the participants will be hosted in the “Volunteers' House”, which is a typical Romanian house, that has been specially equipped to receive the volunteers. The house can host up to 10 people and is equipped with a kitchen, a large living room, bedrooms, a bathroom and a large garden. Almost every room is provided with a wood stove, which represents during the cold winters the only heating source of the house. Every bedroom has bunk beds according to the space. The kitchen, the bathroom and the dining room are common spaces. The house and its living conditions are very simple. Volunteers will be provided with a weekly budget for food and they will be free to make grocery shopping (no alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, etc. allowed). The volunteers will manage themselves to prepare the meals and clean the house.
Romania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. After the great efforts to conform to the requirements, in January 2007 it entered in the European Union. However, serious economic al problems still exist in all the sectors, especially in the service industry. The workcamp will develop in Panciu, a small and rural village in the Vrancea country, around 200 km north from Bucarest. Here the Roma families live in situation of strong indigence and a discrimination toward this ethnic group still exists in school, in work contexts and in the political sphere. Every family has in average 4/6 children, who often grow without figures of reference and in risk of abandonment. The local association "Lumea lui Pinocchio" (“Pinocchio's world”) is strongly committed for the improvement of the integration and the active partecipation of the Roma's population in the Romanian society, expecially with regards to the minors. Every activity of the Daily Center Pinocchio (sport, music, theatre, street art and computer workshops) has the aim of promoting educational projects of personal growth and mutual exchange, targeted at the most disadvantaged children and youngsters. In the Center children of 3-16 years old do activity of scholastic support, creative games and workshops. The local staff is composed by 1 educator, 1 social worker, 1 secretary-accountant, 1 cook, 1 cleaning woman. Romanian volunteers and other international long-term volunteers collaborate with the local staff in the Center. During the summer 2018 we would like to propose games, manual activities, creative workshops with the goal to offer some aggregative moments and educational opportunities to the children and young people of the Panciu community. The aim is to create moments of sharing, of reciprocal exchange, and to the discover the richness of other people through the play.
Asociatia Lumea lui Pinocchio is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 in Panciu, Vrancea, Romania. In 2002, Association Lumea lui Pinocchio (ex Rom pentru Rom) began its activity in Panciu in order to support a sustainable local development. First of all, the association developed projects dealing with the building of houses of some of the poorest Roma families of Panciu and also proposing training opportunities about IT, carpentry and non-formal education. Deepening its knowledge of the territory and observing the local socio-educational problems, in 2006, the Association changed its vision starting to operate directly with children and youngsters. Thus, it has been founded the Educational Daily Centre “Pinocchio” in order to work on social integration starting from an early age. At the moment the association focuses its activities on two main cores: – Daily Socio-Educational Centre Pinocchio (accredited as social services provider), for disadvanteged chidlren, youngsters and families of Panciu, in particular those who belong to the local Roma minority; – Centre for the Promotion of voluntarism Since 2003 the association is accredited for the hosting, sending and coordination of volunteers under the European Voluntary Service and has a multi-year experience in managing youth exchanges projects, both actions being included in the Youth in Action program (now Erasmus+). Since its foundation the association also hosts solidarity workcamps and other groups of short-term volunteers (e.g. scouts, clowns' association, etc.) that usually help both with the educational activities and also with manual activities for the maintenance of the association's buildings.
The required fee is a contribution for supporting the association in providing volunteers with proper accomodation and food. Once the volunteers are at the workcamp, no extra costs are envisaged.
