The work camp project is based in the library’s large Makerspace that hosts workshops and help our users employ our laser cutter, 3D-printers and other machines. The project is to build one or more large urban-gardening furniture for one or all three of the library’s locations, for reference see IKEA’s Space 10 grow room (www.archdaily.com/805835/ikea-lab-releases-open-source-plans-for-diy-spherical-garden-space10) The volunteers will work in smaller groups and meet up on a regular basis during the two weeks. At the work camp beginning, the library will present a finished furniture design, but the volunteers are welcome to make decorations and smaller alterations in agreement with the works camp host. The library has computer controlled machines to cut out the parts, and there will be a lot of manual assembling of the parts. In the first days, library staff will teach the participants to use the machines. During the work camp the library staff will host different workshops for the library’s users, both children and adults. In collaboration with the library staff, participants can also arrange workshops relating to urban gardening and sustainability for the library’s users. We don’t expect participants to know the machines we use in advance – they will learn from the library staff. The participants can expect to learn a great deal on making, local urban gardening and Danish culture. Work hours are between Mon-Fri 9-15.
Sleeping facilities: Sleeping will be at Tapeten in Ballerup. It is a cultural center, where we will sleep in big rooms on the floor. Bring sleeping bags and mattresses. Laundry machine is available Food: Volunteers will cook in teams. There is a kitchen at Tapeten.
Ballerup municipality is a suburb to Copenhagen which makes transportation to the city center of Copenhagen easy and quick. In Ballerup there are several green areas, cafées, a cinema and concert venue, local museum, indoor swimming hall, shopping facilities etc.
Ballerup Bibliotekerne (Ballerup Library) is an active and ambitious public library with three different locations in the municipality of Ballerup. The town Ballerup is situated less than 30 min. from Copenhagen city center with very easy public transportation. The library hosts many cultural events, workshops and activities for adults and children. This is our first work camp and we are very excited! www.bib.ballerup.dk
A clean criminal record is required by Danish law when working with children. It is necessary to send a copy of your record as soon as you have been accepted to the camp. A motivational letter is required.
Participants should be aware that the work is hands-on and practical. If the participants are able to use vector software (e.g. Inkscape, illustrator) it is a big advantage in the Makerspace. If the weather is suitable some of the work might be outside. The work does not require specific workshop skills, but a willingness to use hands and tools a great part of the time. English will be the only language spoken. All participants must be willing to speak English, even though being from the same country or having troubles with the English language. Try your best!
