You will renovate a stone wall around the House of Boigne. Your work will include cleaning (remove the vegetation, scrub the plaster) and ancient masonry (stone mounting, whitewash techniques). Finally, you will construct a coping to preserve the wall of bad weather. You will be guided by a technical leader who will share with you his/her skills in ancient masonry. This workcamp doesn’t require any specific skills. However, it will be necessary to handle the stones that will be already at the site. Your motivation and your capacity to work in a team will be your strengths to carry out this project!
You will be accommodated in tents (2 persons of the same gender in one tent) in the yard of the municipal school of Chanaz. You will have access to sanitary facilities and showers inside as well as to the kitchen (canteen) and a common room for meals and sheltering in case of bad weather.
The group will be accompanied by two camp leaders, a group leader and a technical leader. Together you will participate to the organization of collective life: cleaning, preparing meals in turns using the products bought nearby, organising activities etc. We will favour local products and short supply circuits. Tastings of local specialties may also be organised with local producers.
Chanaz (510 inhabitants) is a historical village where a lot of craftsmen have created their workshops and their boutiques. It’s a very dynamic and touristic place. The viaRhôna, bicycle lane which connects Geneva and the Mediterranean, will give you an opportunity to discover Savoie by the riverside. The Savieres channel and Lake Bourget (just 3km away) offer great possibilities for swimming and are ideal spots for water activities.
Chambery (35km) and Annecy (45km) will make you discover the Savoie region and its traditions.
Get to discover the charms of Chanaz; located on the banks of the Savieres channel that runs quietly to Lake Bourget, this village is considered the little Venice of Savoy!
The fortified house of Chanaz called “Great House of Boigne” is an ancient building of the 13th century that still stands today in the heart of the village. Nowadays the town hall is settled inside. This heritage site was the object of various restorations in the past. The village, eager to continue the work that has been going on for many years, wished to create their first international workcamp in partnership with Concordia this year. Your mission will be to renovate an old stone wall. Come to join us and add your contribution in this project with the help of other young people from all over the world!
Remember to bring gloves as well as working clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Don’t forget to take a warm sleeping bag and appropriate clothing in case of rain or to go hiking in altitude (pullovers, polar sleeve jacket, raincoats…). Do not forget sun protection as well (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen) and a swimming suit. The common living activities will be programmed together with your camp leaders and according to your suggestions! If you would like to share a bit of your culture (cooking recipes, traditional stories), do not hesitate to bring a piece of your country in your backpack!
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
