This is project is focused on community environmental-education and outdoor-learning. After being trained by the host organisation, international volunteers will be creating sculptures and costumes as well as taking part and marshalling a local carnival event to celebrate the community outreach work that the project has achieved over the last 5 years.
Volunteers will also have the chance to get to know the local area and the nearby city of Hastings during a day trip organised by Concordia.
Volunteers will stay in either single or double rooms. There are separate male and female bathrooms and showers. Fully equipped self-catering kitchen with fridge, oven and dishwasher. BBQ area. Internet available.
The accomodation is located on site at Mallydams Wood in the middle of the beautiful Sussex countryside. Mallydams Wood owns 55 acre private woodland for the volunteers to enjoy and the Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve is a short walk away with amazing cliff tops views along the rugged coastline. There is a long stretch of beach about 1 hour walk away which is great for rockpooling and sunbathing. Mallydams Wood is near a local post office with plenty of snacks and also the village of Pett which has two good local public houses with great menus and outdoor seating. Hastings Old Town is a five minute bus ride away and is a hive of activity for artists and musicians. Hastings also has the largest shore-launched fishing fleet in Europe and fisherman still mend their nets and tend their boats under the East Hill cliffs.
Mallydams Wood is a well established wildlife rehabilitation centre, education centre and woodland nature reserve in the South East of England, covering Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. For the last 5 years they have been involved in a community project with the aim to reach and empower local families and young people coming from disadvantaged areas in and around Hastings.
In 2019 Mallydams Wood is happy to invite and host a group of international volunteers to support the final stages of this 5 year project, which will consist in the preparation and running of a local celebration and festival.
No particular skills required, although volunteers who like crafting/creativity and that enjoy being part of events/festivals with a large number of people are welcome. A motivation letter is required.
Volunteers need to have a good level of physical fitness and be confident walking on uneven ground outside.
