The project work is built around the age-old activity of grape harvesting. Wine making goes back to ancient times in Nemea area, indeed it was produced before 1000 BC., but it still is the largest wine producing area of Greece. Volunteers will work outdoors, they will gather grapes from vineyards which will after be used for making red and white wine from indigenous varieties whose tradition goes back thousands of years. Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday from 6:00H to 12:00H. Wine gathering will start early in the morning, in order to avoid the summer sun of August. After one or two days of practicing, volunteers will need to keep up the pace with the other people who will work for eight hours in the fields.
The volunteers will be housed in a technical school building in Nemea which includes a dormitory and kitchen facilities, as well as a gymnasium. The dormitory is provided with beds and mattresses, but volunteers need to bring their sleeping bag. There are toilets, showers (no hot water) and cooking facilities at the school. No internet wi-fi. Air-condition is not available in the school, but there will be fans. Everyday two different volunteers from the group, in shifts, will be responsible for maintaining the group accommodation place clean, as well as for the preparation of all the meals for the group of volunteers.
Nemea is an ancient site in the northeastern part of Peloponnese, a famous region of Greece. Formerly part of the territory of Cleonae in ancient Argolis, it is today situated in the regional unit of Corinthia. The small village of Archaia Nemea is immediately southwest of the archaeological site, while the new town of Nemea lies to the west. After midday the volunteers will have many opportunities to visit Nemea sites, but also to make excursions in wonderful spots, such as ancient and medieval Corinth; the beautiful town of Nafplion with its many Venetian and Byzantine castles; Mycenae and the Agamemnon tomb, a Mycenean period grave excavation at Aidonia; and many other sites. Nemea is also famous for its athletic games which rivaled every four years the games at Olympia, the precursor of the Olympic games. The archeological site in Nemea includes an interesting Museum and the old stadium where the games were held. Volunteers will have a chance to have a swim on a sandy beach under the imposing castles of the picturesque town of Nafplion. They will sample Greek authentic food and they will be immersed in the culture and history of Greece spanning a period of 4000 years.Last but not least, the volunteers will participate in the project during a lively period, as festivities are held to celebrate the Vineyard harvesting with the local Festival called -Great Days of Nemea- organized by the Nemea Winery Association and the Municipality of Nemea. The -Great Days of Nemea- is a very important event that takes place every year in the area of Nemea as well as through activities all over Greece, aiming at promoting not only the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) NEMEA wine based on the Agiorgitiko variety, one of the most dynamic and famous varieties in the world, but also the development of wine tourism in the region. Concerts, performances, gastronomy courses and other activities will take place.
The project -Summerwine In Nemea- is the result of a new partnership with the Municipality of Nemea.
