The workcamp aims at the protection of the environment, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the enhancement of local sustainability. The Municipality of Thermo has a network of ancient footpaths, spreading in the mountain village of Amvrakia. These paths are widely used by locals, tourists as well as hikers. By supporting the building of new paths, volunteers will help to facilitate local peoples transportation. Under the guidance of two local craftsmen who will be their supervisors, volunteers will help to clean parts of rural spaces where the danger of fire is high. Furthermore, they will clean, highlight, preserve, and reconstruct the ancient footpaths in and around the village, created by ELIX, volunteers and local partners during the previous workcamps. Volunteers will also help to clean the local system of water supply in order to ensure better quality for drinking water in the village. Volunteers will work for a maximum of 6 hours per day, with an early wake-up due to the hot sun.
The team of volunteers will be hosted in the municipal school in Amvrakia. The accommodation is basic but adequate; volunteers will sleep on the floor in the common room so they need to bring their sleeping bags and carry mats. There are toilets, a shower and cooking facilities. No internet Wi-Fi. It is a really isolated place, close to nature, away from any shops. Everyday two different volunteers from the group, in shifts, will be responsible for maintaining the group accommodation place clean, as well as for the preparation of all the meals for the group of volunteers. Foot distance between the accommodation and the place where volunteers will work.
Amvrakia is a little village half an hour distant from the town of Thermo. It is located at an altitude of 750 metres, in a region situated in the Southwest part of Greece. In the village there is a cafe, and volunteers might have the opportunity to go swimming. Also, the local community is very excited about the project and is willing to know more about other cultures.Thermo with its unspoiled, traditional beauty is situated at an altitude of 360m, just 3 km from the lake Trihonida, the largest natural lake in Greece which offers unforgettable views. Thermo has an archaeological museum and is surrounded by picturesque villages and monasteries.Patras Airport Araxos is two hours away from Thermos and Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelou is located at 5 hours away. There are regular bus routes that connect Thermos with Athens and Patras.
This year ELIX implements this lovely project for the second time, in close partnership with the Municipality of Thermo and one local association. After the last edition in 2008, we are really happy to make Sustainable Paths in Amvrakia possible again.
ELIX is looking for volunteers that enjoy being in rural and mountain areas, working outdoors and doing manual work, and who have physical ability to perform the tasks described. We ask for a motivation letter, in order for us to learn more about the volunteer, her/his ideas and motivation for this workcamp.
