Join us in the sunny and fresh Cantabria, North of Spain, from July 29th to August 10th, in the first “quasi wwoofing” summer camp for teenagers.
Organised by the WWOOF Coordinators of WWOOF ESPAÑA in its own smallholding, after successful years of experience with wwoofers in this same spot, this year we are pleased to announce this first “pre-wwoofing” camp.
The idea is to introduce wwoofing, promote cultural exchange and enjoy in a rural environment of Northern Spain. We are aiming at about 10 participants. There will be always experienced adults supervising their stay and activity, which will include:

Learn and perform basic tasks in an organic farm while wwoofing: taking care of animals, gardens, trees, land and environment.
Some experience with food: basic cooking, bread, cheese, preserves making
Learning some useful skills in the countryside like: knots, orientation & maps basics, some plants identification… Introduction to some other artistic and practical fields: photography, video, painting, music, even computers…
Great outdoor experiences: camping, trekking, swimming at river & sea
Intercultural sharing: Languages, culture, games, tolerance & social awareness, forums about some mindful movies … In summary we will create a joyful and practical environment for young people that may awake or expand their interest in alternative, modern lifestyles in rural environment.

Attendees will sleep in a house and in a wooden hut in the plot, with access to a fully equipped house (toilets, shower, kitchen, etc.) always monitored by responsible adults. Cooking/Cleaning will be done by participants with the guidance/teaching of the Leaders. Food will be local with a mix of organic produce from the garden and typical meals from Spain.
Participants should be interested in living in the countryside and be socially active.

Why are we organizing this? At WWOOF Spain coordination team, want to give the opportunity young people to participate in this unique international experience in a rural environment. We think it is yet an optimal age to practically introduce or reassure them to alternative, respectful and modern living styles and may be they become “wwoofers” in the future ;-).

Cantabria is in the North of Spain, with very good climate in summer (not too hot) and very green landscape. From the main house, beaches are at about 12 km, via public bus and is possible to swim in the local river within a 40 minutes walk. Lots of places to walk and a small town is nearby with the usual square, shops, etc… Some excursions will be done to the surroundings like beach, river, mountain, town, parks, nearby museum etc.

Cantabria is known as Green Spain. You can look forward to beautiful scenery, excellent gastronomy and unique heritage. You’ll also marvel at the spectacular landscapes, as the coast of Cantabria offers over 60 beaches with fine white sand in holiday resorts such as Laredo and San Vicente de la Barquera. You can try traditional hearty stews like cocido montañés and cocido lebaniego, cakes such as sobaos and quesada pasiega.

Organiser is the Headquaters in Spain fo ethe Movement WWOOF.
WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms, Spain (WWOOF™ Spain) is part of a worldwide movement linking visitors with organic farmers and growers to promote cultural and educational experiences based on trust and non-monetary exchange thereby helping to build a sustainable global community.
The Aims of WWOOF SPAIN
Are to provide individuals from all around the world the opportunity:
To get first-hand experience of organic farming & gardening and to lend a helping hand wherever needed;
To help the organic movement, which is often labor intensive
Make contact with other people in the organic movement
To promote, inform and educate about topics regarding ecological agriculture, livestock husbandry and sustainable lifestyles
To arrange cultural exchanges and offer people who live in the cities the possibility to experience life on a farm or in a rural and ecological settlement in Spain
To set up and promote volunteer projects.
Introducing to our society the ecological agriculture and methodology as a viable alternative.
To promote solidarity between people as well as an ethical economy.

Participants should arrive at Santander Airport preferably (another option would be Bilbao…) on arrival day and we will pick them up taking them to destination in Cereceda, Rasines, and we will accompany them to the same airport on August 10th.

(*) Experience is not required, but certain emotional and physical maturity is needed: Just enough to sleep in a communal tent in the countryside, accept the possibility that some ants may enter their shoes, eat different food to what they are used to, to work a little in the field, speak basic English at least… and certainly be aware they will not be online for a couple weeks.
Lastly they should not be classified as “difficult” kids, in other words: eager to learn, ready to interact and to respect everyone/everything else.
