Educational work, themed excursions, biographical research, political action – these topics are on the agenda of the international summer camp in Buchenwald! You group will help with the care and maintenance work on the “Buchenwald Railway memorial path”, remembering the people deported from Buchenwald to Auschwitz. You will create additional named memorial stones for this path. The practical work will take place in the mornings. In the afternoons there is an extensive study component. In consultation with the ideas and wishes of the participants of the camp, there will be workshops, discussions, tours and museum visits taking place. You will be dealing with different aspects of the complex past of the place, such as the relationship between the classical city of Weimar and the Buchenwald concentration camp. Additional focus will be placed on the question of how societies remember events and which roles such places play. As part of the programme, there will be excursions to Weimar, Erfurt and the Mittelbau-Dora memorial. The well-stocked International Library and the archive are also available for research (on the individual stories of detained people, for example).

You will be staying in rooms with several beds in the international youth meeting centre at the memorial site.
The group will prepare and cook meals together.

The memorial is around 8km away from Weimar – there is a bus which travels to the city during the day. In the youth centre itself there are numerous leisure activities such as table football, table tennis, a workspace and a multimedia centre.

The city of Weimar has around 65,000 inhabitants and is a significant historical and cultural city. Names such as Bach, Liszt, Schiller and Goethe are associated with the place and you can visit the various museums and castles there. 2019 will see both the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Weimar Republic and the Bauhaus university, whose Bauhaus sites were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. Furthermore, you can also enjoy the leisure activities within the city itself, such as a visit to the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, to the cinema or a shopping spree though the city.
