The town of Estella-Lizarra possessed one of the most powerful defensive systems of the kingdom of Navarre from the 13th to the 16th century. His castle was in fact an ensemble of great complexity completed with the smaller castles of Belmerchet and Zalatambor. This fortress was a nearly impregnable redoubt during the Middle Ages and, until the 16th century, it was one of the most prominent elements of the civil architecture of the town. Today, the rocky eminence occupied by the castle is coro- nated by a cross, the Castles Cross, dominating a town that preserves today the memory of its strength.

The young volunteers will work on three different fronts:
The Scientific, participating in the cleaning of the castle structures, the Archaeological Work in the possible chapel of the castle, with its apse, the cistern and a room between them.
Recovering the area (paths of access to the ruins of the fortress)
Promotion of the historical heritage of the Castle(guided visits of their own work place for the local community).

Estella is a historic town and an important step on the Pilgrims Way to Santiago de Compostela. It offers visitors history and art, good shopping, excellent gastronomy, a diverse programme of cultural events and colourful traditions. It is a romantic town that places great value on its palaces, stately homes, churches, convents, bridges and beautiful buildings. The town of 14,000 inhabitants will surprise you with its flourishing commercial life and bustling Thursday market, its passion for music and theatre, as well as its impeccable cuisine.

The work will take place in ESTELLA-LIZARRA, an important point in the Pilgrim s way to Santiago.Working in open nature will allow you to enjoy this rural area in the freshness of the North of Spain.
The accommodation will be in Estella s Youth Hostel.
Bedrooms are provided with 6 beds per room, with communal bathrooms with showers and hot water. The organisation covers cooking of meals and provides sheets and pillowcase. Volunteers must bring their own towel.

The place is located between mountains, in a Estella, 45km away from Pamplona, in Navarra, the northern area of Spain adjoining the French border. The work, which will be developed in the open nature, will allow you to enjoy all this rural area. In addition you can enjoy Estella itself with its multiple palaces, hamlets, forests and mountains, medieval streets, open market, caves, etc. are nearby. Nearby are also Pamplona and the beaches of San Sebastian or Biarritz.

The INDJ is the Department of Sports and Youth of the Government of Navarre. The INDJ develops a program of work camps for young volunteers from all countries to learn the history and culture of Navarra.
