Volunteers will be involved in all aspects of vegetable and fruit growing: planting, weeding and harvesting vegetables and picking fruit, including soft fruit e.g. berries. 60 different vegetables are grown, some in polytunnels, so work can continue even if it is raining. There could possibly also be some light construction work.

In tents (please bring your own, plus a sleeping bag and rollmat) at the centre of the farm. Food will be healthy and home-made – 2 people will have the afternoon off from farm work to cook for the group each day. There are several covered spaces for the group to use to socialise and relax. Vegetarian diets can be catered for.

LOCATION:
Canalside is 3 kms east of the town of Leamington Spa. It is a pleasant 40 minute walk along the canal to the town. Bicycles are available to borrow.

LEISURE:
There will be two days off (but not on Saturdays which are “collection days” when many local people gather at the farm). Nearby tourist attractions include the world-famous Warwick Castle and Stratford on Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace), and the major cities of Coventry, Birmingham and Oxford are all close by. On Sunday 16 June there is a possibility to visit the Leamington Peace Festival.

Canalside Community Food is a Community Supported Agriculture scheme for people in the surrounding area. It provides weekly, organic, produce shares, containing vegetables all year, and fruit when in season, in a range of sizes suitable for different households.
“Canalside Community Food is run by a small but very committed group of people, the original core of whom have been meeting since the Summer 2005. We are a diverse group, ranging from farmers to organic researchers to teachers, but what we do all share are strong beliefs in local food and community empowerment, and in particular what we are doing through our work at Canalside.”
Local consumers become members and many come as part-time volunteers to the farm so there will be plenty of opportunity for the volunteers to meet local people.

VAP HOSTING FEE: Volunteers will be asked to pay a fee of £80 GBP upon arrival. VAP charges this fee as without it we would be virtually unable to organise any projects in the UK.
