The volunteers will work with seasonal tasks in the school indoors and outdoors such as tidying the environment after winter. There will also be some tasks related to the protection of local endangered seal (Saimaa ringed seal) and visits to local schools and other places.
Accommodation will be in dormitory, meals provided. There are possibilities for various creative and other activities. Sauna and swimming in the lake are also available.
Punkaharju is located in eastern Finland near Savonlinna and it takes about four hours by train from Helsinki. The school is situated in right on Punkaharju ridges surrounded on both sides by lakes. The area offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking in the forest. The volunteers can join some Finnish language and culture lessons.
The host organization Ikko is a modern, non-political and non-religious folk high school offering both general and vocational education for Finnish and international students and groups throughout the year. They also host special target groups such as students with special needs as well as young asylum seekers.
The volunteers need to be 18-30 years old European Union citizens or residents, who are motivated to volunteer in Finnish countryside and need the EU support for taking part in international volunteering. There will be no fees and the travel costs will be reimbursed.
