Werk

The village is crossed by a river that has its source in one of the deepest lakes in Europe, the Pavin Lake. On the banks of this river called Couze pavin , inhabitants once built water mills to use the energy offered by the river. These mills are now in ruins but there are remains to save Your mission will therefore be to preserve these mills. First of all, you will have to clear the ruins between the exposed part of the mill and the river : remove invasive plants in order to make the architecture of the mill visible. Second of all, your mission will be to consolidate the ruins by rebuilding dry-stone walls. You will learn how to place the stones to build a strong and stable wall. This workcamp is really important as it will preserve the history written by the inhabitants of the past. It will allow visitors to discover this typical heritage of the town. You will participate in the work with the other international volunteers and a technical supervisor will teach you the techniques related to restoration and reconstruction. You will work 4 to 5 hours a day.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be accommodated in an exceptional setting in small chalets. Mattresses are provided. Bring your sleeping bag and warm clothes for the night (almost 1000 m above sea level). Sanitary facilities on site. You will have access to an equipped kitchen where you will prepare your meals. Several shops are accessible in the village of Besse.

Locatie en vrije tijd

The village of Besse is considered as one of the most beautiful sites in Auvergne. It is also part of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park. Besse is located in the Sancy massif, born 5 million years ago and whose highest peak, Puy de Sancy, culminates at 1886 meters above sea level. A hiking trail leads to Puy de Sancy directly from Super Besse. The village benefits from a preserved environment and superb landscapes made of volcanoes and lakes. Besse is located 1 hour from Clermont-Ferrand (the capital of the Auvergne region). Former medieval city, the town is labeled Small town of character . You can visit its belfry (tower), its ramparts and its 8 monuments classified as Historic Monuments. You can go to Pavin Lake, located in the crater of the oldest and deepest volcano in France. A route goes around it, the landscapes and the view of the Sancy are magnificent. Touristic village, Besse is a lively and festive town. The Fete de l Estive, organized every first Sunday of August, brings together hikers and herds of cattle for a walk to the viewpoint of Pavin Lake. On arrival, on the Estives plateau, are offered: traditional dance and music, workshops-discovery of ancient trades, agricultural demonstrations, a festive meal ...
