Take part in a workcamp between city and nature, by participating in the renovation of an old Water Carousel that was used to irrigate the Bois de Coquille, an island of greenery at the entrance of the city of Saint-Jean-de-Braye, East of the Metropolis of Orleans, in the Loire Valley, located in the heart of France, at the gates of the Loire castles. For this third consecutive workcamp, you will continue the work to enhance the heritage and biodiversity of the wood named Bois de Coquille. Abandoned for many years, the Water Carousel needs to be renovated, starting with the exterior walls. Your work will consist in removing the concrete of the stone facade and then repointing it with lime according to traditional techniques respectful of the history of the building. In order to enhance the site, you will also contribute to the development of a path between the Water Carousel and the Bois de Coquille. Part of the work will be carried out using a secure scaffolding. A medical certificate for working at height is required to participate. Furthermore, thanks to the participatory budget, the inhabitants of Saint-Jean-de-Braye have set up a zip line on the Loire riverbanks in the summer of 2020, on the bike road of La Loire à Vélo. You will participate in the construction of benches and outdoor furniture facilitating the access of families and elderly people to the riverbanks of the Loire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This workcamp is part of a project of three workcamps organized by the Metropolis of Orléans with its member municipalities of Orléans, Saint Cyr en Val and Saint-Jean de Braye and the CRIJ Centre-Val de Loire (regional information center for youth) to help people discover the Loire region and its heritage and cultural wealth. You will have the opportunity to meet and exchange with the volunteers of the Orléans and Saint-Cyr-en-Val workcamps during the welcome drink, the intercultural day and the itinerant inauguration of the work carried out on the three workcamps.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be accommodated in a municipal gymnasium equipped with small rooms delimiting sleeping areas for two people. Cots and blankets will be provided for sleeping. Please, remind to bring your sleeping bag. Sanitary facilities will be accessible near the accommodation with showers and separate male/female toilets. You will be able to use the school's fully equipped kitchen and cafeteria for meals. With the budget allocated to the leaders’ team, you will participate in the grocery shopping and the preparation of meals, with a preference for healthy and local products. You can bring your own recipes to share them with the group.

Locatie en vrije tijd

1h from Paris, the city of Saint-Jean de Braye stretches along the Loire, a royal and wild river, classified by Unesco as an "exceptional cultural landscape". Its surroundings, part of the Loire River circuit by bike, join Orleans, the regional capital and neighboring city. Between the Loire and the forest, the city owes its reputation to its industrial past and its remarkable biodiversity. You will have the opportunity to discover the many parks, the local historical heritage and to participate in the summer festivities and activities: beach sports, skate park, guinguette in the park of the castle of the long alleys...

Please note that you will have to work at height, on scaffolding. We therefore ask you to provide a medical certificate for working at height.

The workcamp takes place in an urban environment. For practical and ecological reasons, travel will be mainly on foot, by bicycle and public transport. It is therefore essential to know how to ride a bicycle. Remember to bring gloves, clothing and shoes suitable for outdoor work. Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag, summer and rain clothes, a swimsuit and toiletries. Please, remind to bring your healthcare protection equipment: masks and hydroalcoholic gel. You can bring board games, a musical instrument or any other object you wish to share with the group. Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
