Olbrück Castle is located in the Brohl Valley, the neighbouring valley of the Ahr Valley, which was massively destroyed by the flood. There were many deaths there, the entire infrastructural structure was destroyed, some villages will probably never be rebuilt. Our workcamp has two tasks: 1. securing the Olbrück castle complex: Much of Olbrück Castle is in ruins, only the large tower has been reconstructed. The castle grounds are a magical place where you feel transported back in time. It is located in the middle of nature, but the view extends into the Rhine valley and to Bonn. Today, the castle grounds are used as a kind of open-air museum and to host cultural events. Unfortunately, in the last year access had to be restricted for safety reasons. In several places, remains of the walls are no longer safe. That's why the local association that cares for the preservation of the castle is asking for your help. Together with a group of former craftsmen (who are now retired), you will start securing the masonry. In concrete terms, mortar joints are being renewed, stones that have fallen out of the walls are reinserted and fixed. You will help to clear the walls from vegetation and to refasten the wall crowns (the top of the wall). In this first project, you will only work in areas that are accessible without scaffolding. 2. supporting the people affected by the flood. The concrete tasks cannot be named here today, but two directions of support are possible for the international volunteers: on the one hand, concrete clean-up work on buildings and facilities that have not been a priority so far (playgrounds, cemeteries, youth facilities, etc.) and, on the other hand, care services for the children whose parents are helping with clean-up work in the neighbouring valley. It is holiday time and the helpers are not allowed to bring children into the disaster area. It is important for us to have these two different tasks, as we always have to wait for a specific request to support the flood victims. So on some days the whole group is in charge of flood relief, on other days a part of the group and on some days all volunteers might work at the castle.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will stay in the community centre of the small hamlet Hain at the foot of the castle. The house offers enough space for the group. It is fully equipped withkitchen and sanitary facilities including shower. The outdoor area surrounding the house invites you to have your meals outside, enjoy the outdoor table football and provides other freetime possibilities.

Locatie en vrije tijd

Burg Olbrück is situated in a hilly landscape not far from the Rhine and Bonn. The next village Niederdürenbach offers some very active clubs, pubs and some places of interest and – most importantly – many friendly people. A historic railway leads through the village with a real steam engine running on weekends. Niederdürenbach is surrounded by a beautiful landscape, so in your free time you can go hiking, discover nature, have barbecues, and get to know the local inhabitants during different activities together. You will spend most of your time with the people in Niederdürenbach, but you will enjoy a few excursions on your days off - maybe to the Rhine valley or to Bonn or Cologne.

All volunteers must be vaccinated against tetanus.

Corona/Covid19 situation in German workcamps: Corona incidence levels in this region are very low (4.6 per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected within the last 7 days - as of 19 June). Due to legal requirements, we have to ask for a negative Corona test no older than 48 hours upon arrival at the work camp. During the camp, all hygiene regulations are observed, and all volunteers take a self-test twice a week. Masks are not permanently required within the group, but are required for external contacts. More information can be found in the info sheet.
