Werk

WHV 2022 aims to include the WHV volunteers in the landscaping tasks in theWorld Heritage Site Fortress of Suomenlinna. There are also plans to introduce local tourism operators to the volunteer camp to create genuine understanding of the state of visitor management in the location and practical examples of operations around tourism in general. Suomenlinna, being one of the most visited destinations in Finland with more than 600 000 visitors in summer months as well as a lively neighborhood of about 800 inhabitants, gives the volunteers a perfect example of a Finnish Cultural Heritage Site and workthat is done for its preservation and presentation locally but also in collaboration with partners.Suomenlinna has plenty of landscape maintenance tasks that cannot be performed by machinery but, instead need manpower. The volunteers will work outdoors under the supervision of our gardeners. Throughout the2022 WHV project the aim is to have an open discussion between volunteers, hosts and other interest groups. We want to introduce the variety and amount of methods that are used to preserve and promote World Heritage in Finland and possibilities that a single person has by giving their contribution into this work.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

The organizer will provide the volunteers accommodation in Hostel Suomenlinna dormitories (one for women, one for men). All meals will be provided by the organizer. Volunteers will participate in preparing some of the meals.

Locatie en vrije tijd

Fortress of Suomenlinna, built gradually from 1748 onwards on a group of islands, is located 15-minute ferry ride off the City of Helsinki, capital of Finland. Helsinki is a modern and cosmopolitan city and home to around 600,000 residents. Since 1973, the fortress buildings have been renovated to serve as apartments as well as workspaces, to house private and public services, and for cultural purposes. Today, Suomenlinna is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Finland and constitutes a district of Helsinki with 800 inhabitants. http://www.suomenlinna.fi/en/

Vereisten

The volunteers need to show interest towards World Heritage and prepare themselves before the camp in order to tell about the World Heritage projects in their home countries. The applicants need to write a one page motivation letter explaining why they would like to join the project, if they have any previous experience in WHV volunteering and what could be their contribution to the project. Due to covid-19 pandemic all the volunteers need to have certificates of their full series of approved covid-19 vaccinations or a certificate of earlier covid-19 infection less than 6 months ago. The volunteers need travel insurance for the duration of their stay. Registration fee 50 euros.
