Participate in the renovation of the inside walls of the church, using the traditional and artistic technique of lime-coloured whitewash, in Saint-Maurice-sur-Aveyron, a village in the Gatinais area, in the heart of nature, two hours south of Paris. Built in the 12th century, this old church, whose portal is listed as a Historic Monument, has problems with moisture infiltrations which alter the interior plastering of its walls. Following the first year workcamp of 2021, your work will consist first of all in purging the deteriorated coatings, then in coating the stone with lime, before carrying out a fresco with lime-coloured whitewash, in order to recover the colour and the pattern of the original coating. This workcamp will enhance the preservation of this local heritage and embellish the nave, reflecting the light of the stained-glass windows under the atypical wooden framework.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

Your accommodation will be located 10 minutes away from the work site. You will be accommodated in individual tents at the stadium, close to the locker rooms where you will have access to the sanitary facilities and showers as well as a to the kitchen. You will be able to retreat there in case of bad weather. A marquee will be at your disposal for meals. With the budget allocated to the leader’s team, you will take part in the shopping and the preparation of meals, by privileging healthy and local products. You can bring your own recipes to share them with the group. A washing machine or a Laundromat will be available during the stay (please take clothes for two weeks). You will be able to have access to the Wi-Fi at the town hall or by sharing the Wi-Fi hotspots of the French volunteers and the camp leader’s team.

Locatie en vrije tijd

Located two hours south of Paris, in a green setting between woods and bocage, you will enjoy the postcard landscapes offered by the riverbanks of the Aveyron, the ford of Fontainejean and its wash houses, opening the way to a charming hamlet typical of the Gatinais country. Nature lovers, many hikes are offered to you in your free time, which is ideal to recharge your batteries peacefully. You will also have the opportunity to discover the nearby Briare canal, linking Montargis to the Loire Valley and its castles, including the Renaissance-style castle of Sully-sur-Loire.

Saint-Maurice-Sur-Aveyron is a rural village with a rich and surprising heritage, in the middle of nature: the ruins of the Fontainejean abbey and the remains of the dungeon of one of the two castles, "l'infernat", both bear witness to its history. Originally from the Celtic "avarona", the name of the small river crossing the village illustrates the early presence of Gallic populations in the village. Located in the heart of the village, on a hillside, the church is subject to a restoration project carried out by the municipality. Very welcoming, the inhabitants will be able to tell you the history of their village and will propose you to visit Guedelon, a fortified castle being currently built with techniques of the Middle Ages.

The construction site is located in a rural area. For practical and ecological reasons, travels will be on foot. Remember to take gloves, clothes and shoes suitable for outdoor work. Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag and a mattress to sleep. Also remember to bring summer and raincoat, as well as your swimsuit and toiletries. Also plan to bring your own sanitary protection equipment: masks and hydro-alcoholic gel. You can bring board games, a musical instrument or any other object from your country that you wish to share with the group. Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
