Take part to the preservation and renovation of a medieval tower from the 10th century, defence of the castle of Foulques Nerra (Historical Monument), count of Anjou who once ruled the Loire Valley, in the small town of Semblancay next to Tours, the centre of the beautiful Touraine, two hours south of Paris. You will first take part in the cleaning and the accessibility of the working site, by securing the weakened walls before sorting out the stones which were detached from the tower. In a second step, you will deconstruct the detached parts before restoring the joints in order to start the reconstruction in stone-lime masonry. Jewel of local heritage to be safeguarded, this tower is part of the fortified enclosure protecting the medieval castle, witness to the battles and epic conquests of the Middle Ages. Part of the masonry work will take place on a scaffold.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be accommodated in individual tents near a collective room where you will have access to sanitary facilities and showers as well as a kitchen and a covered area where you will be able to have your meals and withdraw in case of bad weather. Remember to bring your mattress and sleeping bag. With the budget allocated to the animation team, you will participate in the shopping and the preparation of the meals, by privileging the healthy and local products. You can bring your own recipes to share with the group. A washing machine or a laundromat nearby will be available during the stay (please bring at least 2 weeks of clothes). Possibility of accessing the Wi-Fi at the town hall or sharing the connection with the French volunteers and the animation team.

Locatie en vrije tijd

Located two hours south of Paris, in the heart of the woods and valleys of Touraine, the town of Semblancay is located north of the city of Tours (accessible by bus and train), a large regional city bordering the Loire River, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historical province in the history of France, Touraine has been home to great names that have nourished French culture: from Leonardo da Vinci to Francois Rabelais and Honore de Balzac. The region is famous for its goat cheese, which you can enjoy with a glass of red or sparkling wine from the world-famous local grape varieties. During your free time, you will have the opportunity to discover the sweet way of life in Touraine.

The city of Semblancay is working on the development of its historical heritage, witness of its rich past in historical characters, in the heart of Touraine and its natural setting. You will have the opportunity to meet the inhabitants and the local associations who participate in a live show which takes place near the castle and which retraces the history of France, from the Ancient Regime to the Revolution: 400 actors, 20 horses, 40 horsemen, 30 stuntmen who play the fights on stage... Throughout the workcamp, you will also be able to share your knowledge and know-how with the young people of the association La Source, which welcomes mentally handicapped children and adults.

Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

The workcamp will take place in a rural environment. For practical and ecological reasons, travel between the accommodation and the work site will be on foot and by bicycle. Remember to bring gloves, clothes and shoes suitable for outdoor work. Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag and a mattress to sleep on. Also remember to bring summer and rain clothes, a bathing suit and toiletries. You should also bring your own sanitary protection equipment: masks and hydro alcoholic gel. You can bring board games, a musical instrument or any other object you would like to share with the group.
