Come and help us preserve hiking paths in a natural reserve! You will work in teams of volunteers in the heart of the mythical Aubrac Mountains in southern France to clean up a hiking path through nature. Aubrac is a very rural area that lives on free-range cattle farming, producing some of the country’s best food! The Compostela pilgrim path cuts through the mountain. You will also attend workshops on archive studies, to learn about the history of the medieval town and how the landscape has evolved through the ages.

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be accommodated in a tent, with access to toilets, showers and kitchen. The group will share the cleaning chores and prepare meals together. The budget will be allocated to the camp leaders and you will participate in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals, prioritizing products from the market and local producers. Please bring your sleeping bag and mat. You will wash your clothes and other items manually.

Locatie en vrije tijd

Aubrac Natural Parc extends over a volcanic and granitic plateau of 1,500 km2. The volcanic eruptions occurred between 6 and 9 million years ago. Aubrac has its own bovine species called "Aubrac", which is well adapted to the environment. The cows are nowadays bred for their meat. Before the 1960s, they were bred for their dairy products. The milk was made into cheese in "burons" or "mazucs ", which are small structures in the middle of the pastures. Today, the majority of these structures are in ruin. The region is also known for its knife industry. It is here that the Laguiole knife is made by around thirty local craftsmen. The Compostela pilgrim path cuts through the mountain. Geology lovers: in a range of 50 km around Condom d’Aubrac there are several natural regions such as the Segala, the Causses du Quercy, the Levezou plateau, and the mystic land of Gevaudan, where wolves and other beasts roamed free. You will be able to visit several castles, such as Severac, mentioned in the 2011 Season of the Witch movie starring Nicolas Cage.

Condom d’Aubrac received groups of volunteers in 1996, 1998 and 2000. Young people from Germany, Turkey and France came here to rebuild a bread oven that you can still use to cook pizzas and bread! The municipality is committed to restoring its local heritage through international workcamps.

Please take clothes and footwear for work and hiking (including a raincoat). Bring a warm sleeping bag and a good mattress (tent sleeping), the nights are sometimes cool and humid and if you want, you can bring your own tent. Remember to take a swim suit if we go for a swim! Don’t hesitate to bring home specialties such as photos, games, musical instruments, etc. Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
