Commit yourself to the heritage and social inclusion of Saint-Esteve-Janson, a 389 inhabitants’ typical village in Provence. The village is located north of Aix-en-Provence, on the left bank of the Durance River, surrounded by natural swimming spots. You will discover the Provencal landscape with its captivating fragrances, lulled by the song of the cicadas... You will take part in the renovation of the small chapel of the village, dating back from the 12th century, very loved by the inhabitants of the commune. Volunteers with disabilities living in Saint-Esteve will join your group of international volunteers during the work. The intervention will consist of repairing the existing cracks and repainting the 6-meter-high interior of the chapel, restoring its furniture and the floor and weeding the exterior façade. Beyond the technical aspect, the main objective will be to include participants with autism in the project, in order to create a social link between the local population and the residents of the medical house. The impact of the project is twofold!

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be accommodated in tents in the outdoor fields of the Capelieres medical house, 1km walk from the work site. Don't forget your sleeping bag, camping mat and pillow! The place, surrounded by trees, has access to water, electricity and WIFI. The adjoining room has a kitchen, showers and toilets, as well as an area equipped for indoor games and sports. The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. The budget will be allocated to the group leader and you will participate in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals, prioritising products from the market and local producers.

Locatie en vrije tijd

The municipality of Saint-Esteve is close to the Luberon Regional Natural Park. It is located in the Durance valley, limited to the south by the Cotes mountain range and to the north by the Durance river. Located between these two natural entities, Saint-Esteve-Janson offers a varied landscape of quality, rich in remarkable fauna and flora. You can see, near the village, the vestiges of the Castle of Janson which some sections of walls in ruin still raise. The village has a 12th century chapel, as well as a cave classified as a "historical monument" called the Grotte de l'Escale. Discovered in 1960, it proved to be of great paleontological interest, with notably traces of human occupation. It is now explored by scientists and researchers. Beyond the Provencal hikes, the village's public transportation will take you to Aix-en-Provence, to mythical villages such as La Roque d'Antheron and to swimming spots on the Durance.

Saint-Esteve-Janson is an active municipality and is very involved in the future of its young people. The town wishes to create a social link between the local population and the residents of the medical home (people with autism), through the renovation of the chapel in the village centre. Educators and residents of the medical home are very enthusiastic about the idea of receiving an international work camp in their village!

Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

Remember to bring clothes and shoes for work and hiking. Nights can be cool, so bring a good warm sleeping bag. To avoid mosquito bites, remember to bring mosquito repellent and loose, covering clothes for the evenings. As we are in an area where it can be very hot during the day, bring a hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small backpack and a reusable water bottle. For the public meals and the open house, you can bring a few specialties from home that are easy to carry with you.
