Werk
In the middle of the 20th century, the "White Mountains" of Prenzlau were a popular destination for bathers at Unteruckersee. Today, the site is located in a nature reserve that provides a habitat with rare plants and animals. Moreover, there is a hiking trail, that crosses the area and offers hikers on their way to Prenzlau (about 5km away) a magnificent view over the lake and the opportunity to rest and recharge their batteries. The aim of the work is to preserve and restore semi-arid and dry grassland areas in the area of Unteruckersee. These grasslands are habitats for particularly heat-loving insect and reptile species. These in turn serve as a food source for rare bird species that had long disappeared and now become native again. The local spread of scrub and tree species prevents the formation of dry meadows and can have undesirable effects on the local flora and fauna in the long term. The aim of the work is to remove scrub from a larger dry meadow where numerous wild shrubs have grown over the last 10 years. Then, we would like to plant the wood in the form of Benjes hedges along the footpath. The Benjes hedges will in turn provide shelter and habitat for numerous small animal species. With their work, the participants make a valuable contribution to the preservation and further development of the local natural environment with its diverse plants and animals. The two work camp weeks are professionally accompanied and supported by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Uckermark district. Professionals will present the information about the local biotopes and the background of nature conservation in this specific case.
Accommodatie en maaltijden
Accommodation will be offered in the facilities of the Uckerstadion directly at the Unteruckersee. Toilets and showers, sleeping rooms and cooking area can be used there. Camp beds will be provided, volunteers need to bring a sleeping bag. WiFi is available.
Locatie en vrije tijd
In your free time you can use the offers of the Nature Experience Uckermark, swim in the lake, go on excursions to local sights and over the weekend you can make a trip to Berlin (approx. 100 km), to Stettin in Poland (approx. 40 km), or to the Baltic See. The group can also decide to make a tour with canoes or bicycles. The "Adventure Camp Solaris" offers a variety of modern canoes and bikes to take out on an Ucker tour or a trip around the Ucker lakes. Contact with German young people is organised through the exchange in cooperation with the Children's and Youth Advisory Council Prenzlau.
Vereisten
According to the current regulations, we can only accept volunteers, who are either fully vaccinated (2 to 3 shots of one of the following vaccines: BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca or Johnson&Johnson, Novavax) or recovered (date of infection must be max 180 days old). We will make tests in the beginning and during the workcamp.
Opmerkingen
Workcamp participants should be able to swim if they want to use the swimming facilities of the Ucker Lake. Solid footwear is required for all outdoor work in grounds. Volunteers should bring some warm clothes as the accommodation block is not heated and night time temperatures in August may drop to +12 degrees Celsius. Sleeping bag is needed. Some basic knowledge of German or English is recommended. Please bring rain and working clothes as well as swim suits, a sleeping bag, slippers, towels and warm pullovers with you. You can also bring a map, pictures or special food items from your country.
