At this project you will make an important contribution to the conservation of the Lüneburg Heath. The Lüneburg Heath is a large heath, geest and forest landscape in northern Germany. At its heart are a large number of heath areas, which are threatened by the spreading forest landscape. One of these threatened heath areas is the Schwindebecker Heide near the village of Schwindebeck. It has a spread of only a few hundred metres between the adjacent forests, but stretches for kilometres on sandy paths. The Schwindebeck Heath was a military training area until 1990, when British tanks turned it into a sandy moonscape. Since then, painstaking work has succeeded in revitalising the beautiful heathland. In order to ensure this success in long term, the emerging natural reforestation (succession) must be pushed back every year in order to preserve the heath as a sun-exposed habitat for many heat-loving animal species. Therefore, your main task is to remove all young pine and birch trees from the area. In doing so, you are making an important contribution to ensuring that heat-loving species of insects and reptiles do not lose their important heath habitat. You can find information and photos of your working area Schwindebeck Heath here: (unfortunately only in German)
