Are you interested in archaeology and historical craftsmanship? Then this is the camp for you. You can participate in setting up the archaeological open-air museum “Zeiteninsel” (Times Island). Numerous settlement remains from all prehistoric cultural periods have been discovered in the Lahn valley near to the Niederweimar and Argenstein areas. The extensive archaeological evidence proves that there has been a constant settlement in the region for millennia. The first archaeological open-air museum on the history of settlements in the region of Hessen is being set up here in order to display the rich archaeological discoveries. There will be 5 stations on the grounds of the museum, each dedicated to a certain cultural time period with the associated buildings, farmland and natural vegetation. You will be involved in the completion of a residential stable from the late Bronze Age (around 1000 BC). In such a house, almost 20 m long and around 6-8 m wide, a large family or clan together with their animals probably lived. Under professional guidance from a team on-site, you will learn how the house walls are built from wickerwork and clay. You may also have the opportunity to try out ancient techniques such as grinding grain/corn, lighting a fire (without a lighter), archery, or bronze casting. in German:

Accommodatie en maaltijden

You will be staying in a local youth centre in Wolfshausen. The group will prepare and cook meals together. Money for the food shopping is provided to you. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any allergies when registering.

Locatie en vrije tijd

You will be staying in Wolfhausen, a district of Weimar (Lahn). It is very rural, but there is a train station in Niederweimar from which you can reach the university town of Marburg, with its numerous attractions, in just 7 minutes. Besides this, major cities such as Frankfurt and Kassel are also very easily reachable by train. If you haven't had your fill of archaeology after working, you could also visit the “Römerkastell Saalburg” archaeological open-air museum near to Frankfurt.

Covid Rules: 2G+: Vaccinated and recovered persons must arrive with an official negative rapid test (max. 24h old) or PCR test (max. 48 h old), take a self-rapid test on arrival and then a self-rapid test at least every 72 hours. We will provide self-rapid tests for the arrival and the whole camp period! Subject to changes! You will receive more detailed information after confirming your registration and at least 3 weeks before the start of the camp with the specific info sheet for your camp.

The work involved could sometimes be physically demanding. This camp is designed for participants who are interested in archaeology and historical craftsmanship. Please note: There is a special Teenage Fee of 150€ for international volunteers who applied under 18 in this camp.
