Beschrijving

PROJECT: Agape was and still is an important point of reference for Italian Protestantism. For nearly 70 years, Agape has been a place of education and development, theological exploration, political engagement, acceptance, and validation of differences. Every year many people, with different religions, cultural and political backgrounds, and from different generations, come to Agape for a week to discuss and be challenged, to get to know themselves and each other, and mostly, to exchange experiences around a particular theme. The dimensions of community and voluntary service remain central. The name Agape stands for God's endless love for humankind, a love that "never fails" (1 Corinthians, 13). Agape expresses a strong lay spirituality, where believers and non-believers feel equally at home.

Werk

WORK: The work camp is an international experience, giving the volunteers the opportunity to meet young people from all over the world. In terms of communication, the main watchword at the Center is diversity and open-mindedness. Obviously, depending on whom the project is intended for and the period, the way you will be communicating with others is going to change; but the most spoken languages are Italian, English, German, French, and Spanish. This is your chance to discover different cultures, and ideas and to exchange experiences. Nevertheless, it is advised to speak one of the languages mentioned above, especially Italian, or at least to try to learn a few words before your arrival. The work accomplished on each camp is very important, the volunteers themselves are the main reason for Agape to be able to keep organizing more and more projects every year. Thanks to a group of people living there all year long (the so-called Resident group), but also to the ecumenical and international community coming to help, the center has an effect on its visitors' life. As a volunteer, you will be asked to work WITH the Resident Group. Every Resident has a sector of which they are responsible (kitchen, cleaning, bar, maintenance,... and so on), in which you will help them, each of the Residents will be there to help you and support you. Besides, you all will organize discussions nights, games, and so on... . The principal objective is to create a working group together, not for each other. Each week there will be evenings organized by the residents together with the volunteers in which everybody will have the chance to get to know each other and the project better. Upon availability on some evenings or during non-working hours it will also be possible to participate or observe the activities of the camps (this will be agreed upon with the staff at the beginning of each camp). Of course, if you have any problems, you can still contact Agape's director and deputy-director, Lucia Leonardi and Nataly Plavan. Regarding the working hours, they might vary according to the type of work you are involved in. Yet, an average of 6 to 7 hours a day is required, six days a week. Your help could be needed for the following tasks : - kitchen (preparing food) - dishes (laying and cleaning the tables, dishwasher) - cleaning up (WC and rooms) - maintenance work - bartending Regarding the Center's program during the project, Agape will organize the last days of the camp : - a teenager camp - a gay camp - a feminist camp You're not asked to participate in the organization of the camps: there's a specific group of people, called staff, that has been working on it all year long. But your work in the kitchen or cleaning or maintenance or bar or service will be very important for those camps in order to work out! You can have an overview of the camps organized by the center on their website: http://www.agapecentroecumenico.org

Accommodatie en maaltijden

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: You will be accommodated in 2 to 3-bed bedrooms. The toilets are common on the floor and are being cleaned and disinfected once a day. You are going to help prepare the meals, which will be typical Italian Mediterranean ones, but there is a vegetarian/vegan/pork-free alternative for those who indicated it, as well as for any specific allergies. It is possible to use the washing machine for your clothes. Also available, are electric charging points for cell phones and more.

Locatie en vrije tijd

LOCATION AND LEISURE: Prali is a small village of 300 inhabitants in the Italian Alps. Indeed, the place is located in the mountain, 70km away from Turin, but the volunteers will be able to find a post office, a corner shop, a newsagent, a pub, a disco, a chemist, and shops selling different kinds of goods. In a few words, It's a wonderful village completely surrounded by nature (difficult to reach by public transport). TERMINAL: Torino Airport

Organisatie

PARTNER: Agape International Ecumenical Center is a center located in Prali (a small village at 1600m in the Italian Alps). Founded after the Second World War as a sign of hope and of reconciliation between people, Agape can offer educational Camps, thanks to the voluntary work of many young men and women. It has become a meeting place where you can live an intense experience of community in beautiful and calm countryside. Nowadays, a resident group still lives there throughout the year.
