Take part in the renovation of a medieval tower in Semblancay, a small town near the city of Tours, in the heart of the verdant Touraine, about two hours from Paris.
This medieval tower is a vestige of the castle of Foulques Nerra, Earl of Anjou, who used to rule the Loire Valley in ancient times. The tower has unfortunately been affected by the ravages of time and weather, so much that it has lost its original glory.
Your mission will be to pursue the work begun last year to protect and stabilise the structure, by using traditional masonry techniques. So, you will be helping to bring a local heritage back to life, to the great delight of local residents and visitors.
You will sleep in individual tents. A collective room will be available for the group, where you will have access to sanitary facilities, showers, a kitchen, as well as a space to take your meals or to shelter in case of bad weather. A budget will be allocated to the group leader and you will participate in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals. Following an eco-friendly approach, you will be invited to use local and seasonal products. By the way, feel free to come with your own recipes, it's a great opportunity to share your history and culture with the group. A washing machine or a laundromat will be available (it is still recommended to bring 2 weeks of clothes). Wifi will be available in the town hall or by sharing the connection with the French volunteers and the animation team.
The town of Semblancay is located in the heart of the verdant Touraine. As an historical province of the French history, the Touraine has been visited by many great names of the French culture : Leonardo da Vinci, François Rabelais, Honore de Balzac, and many more. The area is also a gastronomic hotspot. It is famous for its ashy goat cheese, which is usually enjoyed with a glass of local white wine. Another world-renowned speciality, especially because of the quality of the grapes. During your free time, you will be able to explore the beautiful city of Tours (accessible by bus and train), just a few kilometres from Semblancay. Tours is the main city of the Loire Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional architectural heritage, which illustrates the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment.
For a while already, the town of Semblancay is involved in the protection and promotion of its heritage. During the workcamp, you will have the opportunity to discover a very rich local history while meeting the residents and associations that are involved. You will also be able to attend the "scenofeerie", a major sound and light show retracing the history of France, from the Ancien Regime to the French Revolution. Almost 400 actors, 20 horses, 40 riders and 30 stuntmen perform some historical scenes and battles all through the summer, nearby the castle of Semblancay.
It is necessary to know how to ride a bike!
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
The construction site is located in a rural area. For practical and ecological reasons, travels will be on foot or by bicycle. It is therefore necessary to know how to ride a bicycle.
Remember to take gloves, clothes and shoes suitable for outdoor work. Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag and a mattress to sleep. Also remember to bring summer and raincoat, as well as your swimsuit and toiletries.
You can bring board games, a musical instrument or any other object from your country that you wish to share with the group.
