Take part in the preservation of the Chaussadis washhouse, located in the middle of the wilderness, on a high plateau at an altitude of 1,200 metres!
The Chaussadis washhouse is an open-air river washhouse. It is a small square basin surrounded on all four sides by a stone wall and a small drinking trough typical of the region. The site is a green space where it is pleasant to rest in the cool of the trees. Concerned about its heritage, the town council has called on an international volunteer workcamp to help with its renovation.
Your mission: to rebuild the damaged parts of the wash house and to create a stone paving on the ground to enhance it. Depending on the time remaining, you will be able to restore the damaged parts of the surrounding walls and enhance the drinking trough. You’ll spend about 30 hours a week on this site. Alongside the technical leader, you will learn different traditional lime masonry techniques.
You will be accompanied by two camp leaders throughout your stay.
You will be accommodated at the little campsite in Saint-Paul-de-Tartas, in individual tent. Showers and toilets are also available on the site. At 700 meters from the campsite, you will have the fully equipped kitchen and a large activity room for socializing, in the House of associations in the village, reserved for your group.
The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. The budget will be allocated to the group leader and you will participate in the preparation of meals, prioritizing products from the market and local producers. Wi-Fi is available in the village, and you will have access to hand washing laundry.
The location of the village of Saint-Paul-de-Tartas is incredibly special because it is at the crossroads of two regions (Languedoc-Roussillon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) and three wonderful departments: Haute-Loire, Ardeche and Lozere. For lovers of large natural areas, you will be in one of the least populated areas of France and therefore one of the most preserved!
You will have the chance to go swimming in lakes, hike up to beautiful viewpoints, visit the beautiful city of Puy-en-Velay (UNESCO world heritage), the historic village of Pradelles and the town of Langogne. The summer festivals will bring special energy to your camp.
Here you will not suffer from the heat in summer, as the village is located at an altitude of 1,200 metres!
The local council is very committed to ecology and citizen participation. In 2022, it obtained the "Citizen Village" label, rewarding districts that develop a culture of citizen involvement, supporting solidarity and inclusive projects and the ability of all to become actors in the territory. The district has hosted its first international work camp in 2021, to restore hiking trails on the slopes of Mont Tartas.
The objectives of the partnership are to include the local population during the work time and encourage meetings and exchanges between international volunteers and locals. They are looking forward to meeting you and will make sure that you have a pleasant stay in their town!
Please note that it is preferable to know how to swim.
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
Bring work clothes, walking boots and a backpack. Nights can be chilly, so bring warm clothes and a good sleeping bag. You can also bring recipes from your home country, musical instruments and games. You will get around Saint-Paul-de-Tartas by foot, car and occasionally in minibus.
