Take part in the rehabilitation of the first and most popular hiking stage of the famous “Way of Santiago de Compostela” on the Via Podiensis!
This path, located not far from the Way of Santiago de Compostela, is very popular with hikers, pilgrims, tourists and locals. It passes through the charming village of Saint-Privat-d'Allier, perched on a basaltic rock. The local association for the maintenance and enhancement of heritage has identified three damaged sections of path in the heart of the village. Used to organising participative workcamps and events throughout the year, the association would like to call on international volunteers to help restore this hiking trail.
Your main task will be to develop three sections of footpaths to make them accessible to as many people as possible and to make it easier to get around the village on foot. How will you do this? By creating steps with stones and lime mortar that respect the environment.
You’ll spend about 30 hours a week on this site. You will work with the volunteers of the local association who are waiting for you to carry out this project! Alongside the technical leader, you will learn different traditional lime masonry techniques.
You will be accompanied by two camp leaders throughout your stay.
You will be accommodated in individual tents (bring your own sleeping bag), on a site reserved for your group, next to the municipal campsite where you will benefit from the facilities (showers, toilets). You will have access to the village hall, equipped with a kitchen and a large living room. This room will be reserved for your group.
The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. The budget will be allocated to the group leader and you will participate in the preparation of meals, prioritizing products from the market and local producers. Wi-Fi available in the village. Hand washing of laundry.
Perched on a basaltic rock, the commune of Saint-Privat d'Allier is made up of twenty villages and is crossed by the famous Way of Santiago de Compostela which starts in Le Puy-en-Velay; it is the first major stop on the Via Podiensis! The village overlooks the Allier gorges on the slopes of a volcanic massif. You will have the chance to go swimming in lakes, hike up to beautiful viewpoints and visit the beautiful city of Puy-en-Velay (UNESCO world heritage), The summer festivals will bring special energy to your camp. The commune has already hosted international workcamps in the 2000s, which have left a very positive impression to the inhabitants. Being situated on the Way of Santiago de Compostela, the inhabitants have a great tradition of welcoming walkers from all over the world. 30 years ago, the association for the promotion of the heritage of Saint-Privat-d'Allier was created. Its aim is to maintain and enhance the cultural, architectural and landscape heritage of the villages in the commune, to contribute to the embellishment of the villages through floral decoration and to organise meetings and sharing.
This summer, the municipal team and the volunteers of the association have decided to host a new international work camp. They look forward to seeing you there to carry out the work in a spirit of fraternity and conviviality!
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
Bring work clothes, walking boots and a backpack. Nights can be chilly, so bring warm clothes and a good sleeping bag. You can also bring recipes from your home country, musical instruments and games. You will get around Saint-Privat-d’Allier by foot, car and occasionally in minibus.
