Work with the local youth of Stühlingen to bring a nature trail back to life and construct different outdoor elements for locals under the motto “Here Grows the Future”! In this workcamp, you will be working on two parallel projects.
1. In Stühlingen, there is a trail passing through different natural landscapes. The trail has not been properly maintained in the past 30 years, so your work will help to give it a second life for locals and visitors to enjoy. Under the guidance of a work instructor, you will:
• Clean up the trail from overgrowing vegetation and trash;
• Remove old signs and put up new ones;
• Replace rotten wooden elements to make the trail safe and accessible again!
2. As part of a regional concept called “Here Grows Future”, you will realize different constructions both for children and young people but also for local animals. You can expect to construct wooden huts to rest, a balancing log to play, shelters for animals, natural tipis, and a “green classroom” which is an outdoor space for Kindergarten groups. To do this, you will only use natural material! In this project you will practice environmental protection and sustainability together!
Members of the youth fire department will be working with you every day, so you will get to know local young people your age. Although they will not stay at the camp place with you, they will still be part of your group. The work will be guided by different instructors depending on the tasks. You will work 5 to 6h per day. Please bring weatherproof clothing and good shoes! The workplace is about 20 to 25mn from your accommodation on foot.
You will be accommodated in 4 big group tents, on the sports field in Stühlingen. Please bring your own sleeping bag and camping mat! The sanitary facilities (showers and toilets separated by gender) are located in the building of the local sports association nearby. To cook, an outdoor kitchen will be organized for you and you will take your meals on a pick nick area. Wi-Fi should be available in the building of the association and there is no washing machine. Be prepared to spend most of your time outside, surrounded by nature! Indeed, the forest is everywhere to see and the “Wutach” river is only a 100m away from the sports field. Fun fact: on the other side of the river, you are in Switzerland.
Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.
Stühlingen is a very nice town with approx. 5.200 inhabitants, located south of the Black Forest Nature Park, on the border with Switzerland. With its beautiful historic and natural sights, Stühlingen and the region around attract a lot of tourists each year. From Stühlingen you can go on hikes in the Black Forest, visit the famous Wutach Gorge - one of the last wild river landscapes in Central Europe, the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen - the most powerful waterfall in Europe, but also a historic steam locomotive, local museums, the student city of Freiburg or Lake Constance. In Stühlingen itself, you will find everything you need: supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, cafés, ice cream parlours and an outdoor swimming pool which you can go to for free. As you will get to know many local young people, they will probably help you discover the surroundings!
This project is a first time cooperation between the town of Stühlingen and IBG! The municipality of Stühlingen has been looking for a way to bring the old nature trail back to life for a long time and they are very happy about your help! The second project is part of a regional project called “Hier wächst Zukunft” (Here grows the future), where foresters and local youth fire departments cooperate on different environmental projects in 2023. In this workcamp you will meet many local actors and all of them are already looking forward to welcoming you in their beautiful region.
Attention: This project is dedicated to volunteers from Baden-Wurttemberg and its three partner regions: Lombardy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Catalonia. We want to demonstrate that youth is an essential part of a partnership and that this partnership cannot be reduced to the sectors of economy, science, culture and administration. Therefore you should either come from one of these four regions or have a close link to them.
All volunteers need to arrive with a negative covid-test at the camp.
This project is only for volunteers aged 16-20 from Baden-Wurttemberg, Lombardia, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Catalunya (or with a close link to these regions). No extra participation fee.
