Landscape conservation in great surroundings and sightseeing in the big city!
You can experience both at this camp on the outskirts of Hamburg. You will work under the guidance of staff from the Elbe-Tideauenzentrum (nature infocentre) in the nature reserves (NSG) Heuckenlock, Schweenssand, Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe and Elb Island Neßsand as well as under the guidance of staff from BUND (Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland) Hamburg in other nature areas. During the two weeks you will work from Monday to Friday. The plan is to alternate daily between a nature reserve, which is managed by the Elbe-Tideau Centre, and the nature areas for which BUND Hamburg is responsible or with which it cooperates.
The nature reserves (NSG) and areas in which you work are unique in Hamburg and, in the case of the Heuckenlock nature reserve, even unique in Europe. The nature reserve comprises an approximately 100-hectare tidal floodplain forest and a freshwater mudflat in the south of Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg island on the Elbe. Due to its special location between river and land, it is an important refuge for many plant and animal species that have long been displaced elsewhere by cultivation of the landscape. It is one of the most species-rich nature reserves in the Hamburg area. There and in the other three nature reserves you will remove non-native plants, mainly Japanese knotweed. This will be done with both hands and spades. In the nature reserve Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe you will also help to prepare an overgrown area so that a natural orchard can grow there again. In the area, which belongs to the Jugendbauhütte Hamburg (sponsored by ijgd), you will demolish old wooden huts and prune hedges and trees.
The employees of BUND (Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland) Hamburg will work with you to maintain the biotope on the Georgswerder energy mountain, a former landfill site, maintain the compensation areas of the Altenwerder Compensation Foundation, do various gardening tasks in the BUND Nature Experience Garden and, as part of the BUND #canoe4nature project, go canoeing through Wilhelmsburg's numerous canals and clean them of rubbish.
In addition to the practical work, you will learn a lot about nature and environmental protection in general as well as about the natural habitat of the freshwater tidal floodplain and its protection in particular from the staff of the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre and the BUND adventure garden. You will learn a lot about the local flora and fauna, the renaturation of areas, tides and their effects as well as dikes and flood protection.

Gesellschaft für ökologische Planung e.V. (GÖP) - Society for Ecological Planning
Elbe-Tideauenzentrum - Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre
The Society for Ecological Planning e.V. (GÖP) is a non-profit nature conservation association. It looks after 14 of Hamburg's 37 nature reserves and runs the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre, an important extracurricular educational institution dedicated to the freshwater tidal floodplains, which are unique in Europe. With mostly self-built exhibits on local nature, flora and fauna, the exhibition provides insights into these special features and motivates visitors to try things out and experience them.
The staff of the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre carry out nature conservation measures in the 14 nature reserves.
Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e. V. (BUND) - Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany
The Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e. V. (BUND) is a non-governmental environmental and nature conservation organisation and one of the largest environmental and nature conservation associations in Germany.
BUND is committed to the preservation of the natural foundations of life. Its most important goals and tasks include the protection of ecologically valuable areas and landscapes, environmentally friendly and species-appropriate agriculture and forestry, and the conversion of the energy industry to renewable energy sources.
BUND is divided into the regional associations in the 16 federal states. BUND Hamburg was founded in 1981 and since then has been primarily concerned with the protection of urban trees, orchards, biodiversity and water bodies (especially the Elbe). With the NaturErlebnisGarten in the Wilhelmsburger Inselpark, BUND Hamburg has created a place to garden in community, to learn from each other, to exchange ideas with different people about nature and environmental protection and to offer people of all ages free space to experiment, play, discover and observe nature.

The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education.
