At this project you will make an important contribution to the conservation of the Lüneburg Heath. The Lüneburg Heath is a large heath, geest and forest landscape in northern Germany. At its heart are a large number of heath areas, which are threatened by the spreading forest landscape. One of these threatened heath areas is the Schwindebecker Heide near the village of Schwindebeck. It has a spread of only a few hundred metres between the adjacent forests, but stretches for kilometres on sandy paths. The Schwindebeck Heath was a military training area until 1990, when British tanks turned it into a sandy moonscape. Since then, painstaking work has succeeded in revitalising the beautiful heathland. In order to ensure this success in long term, the emerging natural reforestation (succession) must be pushed back every year in order to preserve the heath as a sun-exposed habitat for many heat-loving animal species. Therefore, your main task is to remove all young pine and birch trees from the area. In doing so, you are making an important contribution to ensuring that heat-loving species of insects and reptiles do not lose their important heath habitat. In addition to removing plants, you will also load the biomass and help to remove it. You will work from Monday to Thursday in both weeks.
You can find information and photos of your working area Schindebeck Heath here: https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/natur/sehenswuerdigkeit/4905/soderstorf-schwindebecker-heide.html (unfortunately only in German)
You will stay at a group accommodation in rooms with 3 to 6 beds in the village Soderstorf. There is a kitchen, a large group room that can be used as dining and meeting room, two smaller group rooms and two bathrooms with toilets, washing facilities and showers. The accommodation is surrounded by a large outdoor area where you can play games or have a campfire.
You will cook together. Money for food will be provided. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please state any intolerances during registration.
In your leisure time, you can enjoy your quietly situated accommodation and the beautiful surroundings. You can hike on the 14 km long "Heide-Panorama-Weg" (https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/natur/tour/14003/schwindebeck-wanderweg-heide-panorama.html), visit the Lüneburger Heide Game Park (https://wild-park.de/), which shows about 140 species of wild animals in their natural habitat in a huge park, or visit the village of Amelinghausen for shopping or swimming and pedal boating on the Lopausee (https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/service/sehenswuerdigkeit/1492/amelinghausen.html).
On the long weekend (Friday to Sunday) in the middle, trips to Lüneburg and/or Hamburg are worthwhile.

The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union of Germany e. V. (official German name: Naturschutzbund Deutschland e. V. (NABU)) is a German non-governmental organisation with the aim of protecting nature and the environment. NABU is divided into over 2000 local, district and specialist groups. The NABU Lüneburg district group (German: NABU Kreisgruppe Lüneburg) is the partner organisation for this workcamp. It is committed in many ways to nature conservation and environmental protection in the entire district of Lüneburg. Its tasks include the removal of young woody plants from heathland, the maintenance of orchid meadows, the protection of amphibians and storks as well as environmental education.
