The purpose of the Work Camp is to help with projects that the staff normally have little time to do at school. Therefore, there will be quite a variety of work tasks during the Work Camp. The work consists for example of maintaining the park, building projects, repairing, painting buildings, etc. Furthermore, most of the work will take place outside, and it can be a bit cold with a chance of wind and rain, so dress accordingly.
The program itself will be a combination of work, breaks, and leisure time, in that sense that we have many work tasks to complete before the deadline, but there is also lots of time to get to know each other through activities, which is an essential part of Danish Folk High School tradition. The daily working hours are from 8.00 – 15.00, and you will have Saturday and Sunday free.
Throughout the Work Camp, there will be Camp leaders, who will know the big picture and make sure that everything goes as planned with the different projects. They can also help you plan activities and sightseeing tours in the evenings and at weekends.
Accommodation:
All Work Camp participants will get a nice double room with bedding and linen.
Food:
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided and served at the school.
If you wish to do extra shopping, there is a local shop very close to the school or you can go to the city; Vejen, which is 3 km. from the school.
Bathroom facilities:
Bath and toilet facilities are shared. Laundromats are available for a fee of 20 DKK.
The school is in the city of Vejen, a municipality in Southern Jutland, with shopping facilities, banks, an art museum, etc.
Located West of Vejen is Esbjerg, Ribe, and the North Sea, and to the East are Kolding, Vejle, and Aarhus. This means that there are lots of interesting cities to visit in the area, and it is possible to go to all these places by train or bus from Vejen.
Your Work Camp leaders will help you and the group with organizing activities in your spare time. It is free to enjoy the beautiful nature of Northern Jutland, but some activities such as museums might require an extra charge. The host will not cover additional charges.
Askov Højskole is a Danish Folk High School, based on a special pedagogical idea about equality, cooperation, and dialogue by the Danish writer and philosopher, Nikolai Grundtvig. He envisioned Folk High Schools to be a place where young people could meet across social borders, create friendships, and learn to become active and democratic members of society.
This summer, the school wants to share its place with young people from all over the world, who are curious and interested to learn more about the Danish Folk High School tradition as well as helping with manual work for the outdoor facilities.
In the last couple of years, we have not had sufficient capacity to maintain our facilities outside. Therefore, we need your much-appreciated help with upgrading our current facilities to improve the school environment for the students, in a fun and more creative way. This would make a major difference to their daily life and learning experience while staying here.
One of the school's employees, who oversees the buildings and the outdoor facilities, will guide you to learn how to do the work and what to do. Therefore, you do not need previous experience with manual work. You just need a lot of passion for learning and contributing to a social and cooperative atmosphere where everyone feels included and valued for their ideas and efforts, which they put into the work.
Besides working on the different tasks, we are also meant to have an amusing time together where we get to know each other, have fun with social activities, and create a very strong feeling of community, which Danish Folk High Schools are so famous for.
To participate in this Work Camp, we require you to provide a clean criminal record in English.
Language:
English will be the only language spoken. All participants must be willing to speak English, even though being from the same country or have trouble with the English language. Try your best!
Practicalities:
We expect from you that you want to do manual work, are curious about learning, are responsible and are decent and nice people. The work will mostly be outdoors, also if it’s raining, so bring practical clothes. Vegetarian food is available, and please let us know if you have any allergies.
Transport to work:
You are going to stay at the Danish Folk High School, which is where you are also working on different projects, and therefore, there is no need for transportation.
COVID-19:
Regarding COVID-19, it is our ambition to complete our Work Camps this summer, but it is essential for us that our volunteers feel safe during the time they spend at our camps. This is why we constantly keep ourselves updated on the situation and we follow the Danish government's instructions. Furthermore, we are ready to answer any questions that you might have, and we will keep all our volunteers updated right up until the start of the Work Camp.
