Volunteers will spend 6 hours a day with children and young people in their neighbourhood (outside and in our premises) and implement various workshops and sports activities. These will be planed based on children's characteristics to support and improve their skills and interests and to attract them to spend their free time outside and with responsible adults. During these activities they will pay attention to children's distress and help resolve conflicts and troubled behaviours. Volunteers will take their time to evaluate each day and share their observations about relationships between children, their social and emotional health and think about different approaches that could improve their work and children's resilience.
Volunteers will be accommodated in an old school. In the first floor there's youth centre, in the second floor there are two classrooms, where the sleeping area will be arranged. The accommodation is very basic, there are mets and folding beds, the sleeping bag is necessary. Lunch will be provided by local kindergarden, the breakfast and dinner will cook volunteers themselves.
Polje neighbourhood is located on the edge of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The centre of Ljubljana is easily accessible by public transport and is very lively, especially in summer.
The volunteers will cycle to 4km away neighbourhood from where they will be accommodated. We will provide passes for use of city bikes. Ljubljana is a cycling city thus road for cycling is nicely arrange and terrain is mostly flat.
The newly built Polje neighbourhood is mostly social housing. Primary school teachers face a range of behaviour problems with their pupils, where is a lot of aggression and conflict, learning difficulties, many children are left to fend for themselves, many parents are unemployed or otherwise deprived. Mala ulica public service started working in the neighbourhood in February this year, with a range of activities for children and parents: parenting trainings to support and guide parents towards more active and effective parenting, social skills and emotional literacy workshops for children, and street work to encourage children to be more creative and spend their free time in healthier ways.

Our volunteers must have at least some experience in youth work or work with children, as well as some hobbies that they can use for various workshops and sports activities. The children we work with are often traumatised, so we need people who are patient, kind and emphatic. Some knowledge of working with children with emotional and behavioural problems is recommended.
Children that we work with are very friendly, creative and curious. They mostly come from families with the low socio-economic status where happens a lot of violence and neglecting. That's why is really important for them to feel safe and cared for with youth workers. We try to help them manage their emotions and strengthen their positive qualities while providing them with various activities.
