The monastery of San Mateo Atlatahucan was founded by Fray Jorge de Avila of the order of the Augustinians (1570?), who also founded the temples and of Tlayacapan, Ocuituco, Yecapixtla, and Totolapan. All these monasteries are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Organisatie

Over the last 13 years, the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) initiative has grown tremendously due to increased interest and appreciation for the protection and preservation of World Heritage sites. One of the objectives of the municipalities where these heritage sites are located is to attract more tourism, complement the development actions of each of the towns and value the local tangible and intangible heritage. It is proposed with this program to implement innovative actions by national and international volunteers that contribute to the awareness of local populations about the importance of preserving local cultural heritage. Supporting the preservation work of the 16th century ex-convents on the slopes of Popocatépetl, it is also intended to involve the care of the heritage sites to the young people of Morelos who live in the communities where these ex-convents are located, as well as to involve society. civil in the tasks of preservation and care of heritage.
