As a volunteer, you will participate in the work of registration, conservation and restoration of the front wing of the Casa de las Palestina, within the Valorization plan that is proposed as a continuation of the work carried out after the 2017 earthquake. Among the exercises, the architectural survey, inventory of clay tiles and cobblestones on the floors of the bays, and their restitution, having the practice of the methods applied in antiquity, stand out. The slaking of quicklime, and the elaboration of
mucilage with the nopal slime, the elaboration and application of paint to the lime. They will practice the conservation and restoration of adobe walls, thus rescuing the traditional uses and customs of this community. Also, in other trades with which they will participate will be the elaboration of wooden doors and windows for this property, including their guards and moldings, guided by artisans and restoration professionals. Volunteers are a central part of all these jobs where you will learn and develop your personal and professional skills.
We have prepared an experience close to the people of Huaquechula. We will be able to live in a Basic Rehabilitation Unit, with all the basic services, except shower, and close to both our work space and markets, shops and public transport stops. Shower can be taken at people's houses. Meals will be prepared by cooks from the village and sometimes by the volunteers.
Huaquechula is a small town of 4000 inhabitants, where one of its main attractions are the altars of the Day of the Dead season and the beautiful landscapes that surround it. One of the main economic activities of this municipality is agriculture, in this town beans, corn, peanuts and sorghum are grown mainly.
The main typical dishes of this region are mole, green pipián with zompantle flowers, molotes, black marinade and ash tamales with ayocote beans. We recommend trying the rosquetes, puff pastries, marquesos and polvorones. The activities will be coordinated by AMVIAC and the town hall of Huaquechula. There will be various workshops: chocolate, polychrome clay, chipped wax, ceremonial carpet, visit to the Aqueduct of Matlala, the Páramo of Duendes, Jagüey, traditional altar.
The House of the Palestina is a unique property in Huaquechula. Built in the 18th century, it stands out for its compound arches and interior moldings, it is located right next to the famous San Marino de Tours former convent. This will be our setting for the conservation, rescue and enhancement project, in which we collaborate with the INAH Puebla Center, the Huaquechula City Hall and the State Department of Culture. Added to this is the exchange of good practices that will be carried out through the French Embassy in Mexico, with the French association REMPART. Our goal is to revitalize this historic building to return it to the cultural activities of this town, with the possibility that it will soon house the museum itself. With this, we contribute to the rescue of the Cultural Heritage, as well as to the improvement of the quality of life of the inhabitants of Huaquechula.
On the dates that you will be in Huaquechula, there is a hot and dry afternoon, so we recommend that you take into account the following:
-Bring work clothes, comfortable clothes.
-Sleeping bag.
-Cap or some sort of hat and work shoes.
- Mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
-One or two changes of clothes for events with the Municipality, something more formal-casual.
-Personal hygiene supplies.
At night it gets a little chilly, so we recommend you consider a light sweater.
