Volunteers will participate in awareness raising activities and promote the World Heritage Education Program and its activities in local schools and surrounding communities. They will also learn and practice traditional restoration, construction and lime painting techniques and help clean and restore the most damaged parts of the monastery under the supervision of the competent authorities. In addition, to provide better management and promote World Heritage sites, they will have the opportunity to make a presentation on their country/state's heritage for students and local people and conduct a survey for the site's managing authorities or interviewing tourists who visit the site and members of the community. They will visit symbolic places of the municipality and discover the gastronomic heritage of this magical place.
Accommodation will be in the Basic Rehabilitation Unit which is part of the DIF system and has everything necessary to stay and clean up. In addition, Calpan has an attached building in which volunteers do activities, meetings and other activities. The accommodation is located right in front of the former convent in the center of Calpan.
Volunteers will cook their food and sometimes people from the village will offer them lunch or diner.
Calpan is a small town near the capital city of Puebla. It is known by one of the most traditional dishes in Mexico: Chile en nogada which is a Mexican dish of poblano chiles stuffed with picadillo (a mixture usually containing shredded meat, aromatics, fruits and spices) topped with a walnut-based cream sauce called nogada, pomegranate seeds and parsley. It is widely considered a national dish of Mexico. It also has the convent as a touristic attraction. Other communities have also local attractions that volunteers will discover.
WORLD HERITAGE PROGRAM: Over the last fifteen years, the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) initiative has grown tremendously due to the growing interest in and appreciation for the protection and preservation of World Heritage sites. For the second time, an international volunteer camp will be held in the municipality of Calpan. Among the objectives are to attract more tourism to the region, complement the development actions of this locality, evaluate the tangible and intangible heritage, and highlight the local cultural heritage. Calpan will once again receive national and international volunteers to carry out awareness-raising activities on the importance of preserving local cultural heritage, supporting the preservation of the former 16th century convent on the slopes of Popocatépetl. This project foresees a collaborative work with the managing instances of the patrimony of the state of Puebla.
Interest in cultural heritage issues. Bring some traditional items to show the local people about their culture.
We recommend you bring different means of payment. It is always recommended to have enough money to travel and to face unforeseen circumstances, ideally through a combination of different means of payment. Keep your family and some friends informed about your trip, including the dates and places of stay and inform the embassy or consulate of your country in Mexico about your stay.
The volunteer must have Medical Insurance or cover any medical expenses that may arise. Since the costs of hospitalization and medical treatment in most countries have to be borne by the patient and can be quite high, we advise you to obtain health insurance with full coverage in case of illness or accident during the trip.
The most important thing to avoid problems during your trip is respect: respect the local population and their laws and customs. Respecting local customs also includes paying attention to clothing. It requires a special sensitivity regarding religious beliefs, and certain attitudes can be a source of misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations.
Other important tips to follow are: The use of drugs is prohibited within the collective spaces of volunteers and in general in AMVIAC projects. AMVIAC has the right to ask the volunteer to leave the project in case of drug use.
