During the first week, volunteers will support the local rangers in essential environmental conservation activities in Petralia Sottana, focusing on forest maintenance and fire prevention. Their tasks will include clearing dry vegetation, maintaining trails, and assisting local teams in safeguarding the pine forest and nearby wooded areas. These efforts are crucial for reducing fire risks and preserving the natural landscape, contributing to the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem. Volunteers will also learn about local strategies for fire prevention, gaining insights into sustainable land management practicesAfter completing the activities with the rangers, the volunteers will prepare a final public event to carry out in the square on the last evening that the volunteers will be in Petralia. In the second week, volunteers will move to Palermo to collaborate with the Rangers d Italia i Sicily Section ODV. Here, they will extend their efforts by taking part in green area maintenance, focusing on ensuring these spaces remain safe, well-preserved, and accessible. Activities will include clearing pathways, managing vegetation, and participating in initiatives to promote environmental awareness within the community. Throughout the project, volunteers will develop practical skills while fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and its preservation. These activities not only support environmental conservation but also create opportunities for cultural exchange, teamwork, and personal growth.

Volunteers will stay in two locations during this program. In Petralia Sottana, they will be accommodated in a local monastery, with meals and local transport tickets provided by InformaGiovani ETS. In Palermo, volunteers will reside in a centrally located hostel in shared 4-bed rooms. InformaGiovani ETS will ensure the provision of meals and local transport for both locations.

This volunteer program spans two distinctive settings in Sicily, Italy. In Petralia Sottana, a picturesque town nestled in the Madonie Mountains, volunteers will work in green areas surrounded by forests and natural landscapes, offering a serene rural environment. In contrast, Palermo, the vibrant capital of Sicily, features historical landmarks, bustling urban spaces, and scenic coastal views. Volunteers will engage in environmental work while experiencing the city s dynamic atmosphere, balancing cultural exploration and impactful service.

The Municipality of Petralia Sottana plays a pivotal role in managing the pinewood where volunteers will undertake their activities and the monastery that will host them. Situated within the Madonie Park, a protected natural area, the municipality promotes environmental conservation and sustainable practices through the activities carried out by volunteers. Their contributions aim to preserve the region s unique ecosystem and cultural heritage. The Associazione Rangers d Italia Sezione Sicilia ODV oversees the Monte Pellegrino Natural Park and surrounding areas. For years, this association has been committed to managing, maintaining, and organizing initiatives within protected environments. Volunteers will assist in essential conservation tasks, directly supporting the Rangers in their mission to safeguard biodiversity and promote environmental awareness. Both partners enable volunteers to actively engage with local ecosystems, contributing to the protection and sustainable development of Sicily s natural and cultural landscapes.This activity is part of ESC High Priority Area VEIL-CORPS funded by the European Union in the frame of the European Solidarity Corps Programme.
