The technical tasks will be carried out in the framework of the NextGeneration project “GiroNat – Turnaround to reNaturalization for a more resilient and healthy Girona”, with the support of the Sorellona’s staff.
The principle tasks are described below:
- Removal of sediments in natural river pools. Sedimentation is one of the main causes that natural river pools are disappearing, worsened by the severe droughts caused by climate change. Volunteers will restore this natural river pools by removing the sediments, and making the water available for fluvial and non-fluvial fauna species, especially for amphibians and fish.
- Pond naturalization and restoration. Water bodies are crucial for biodiversity, as an habitat but also as blue corridors. Volunteers will restore and renaturalize them to increase its biodiversity.
- Elimination of invasive alien species (IAS). IAS are a major threat for biodiversity all around the world. The principle task is to reduce (or eliminate, if possible) the population of the most problematic invasive alien species, to reduce its impact on the habitat and facilitate the regeneration of native species.
- Monitoring of fluvial fauna. Aquatic species suffer from a huge range of different threats, from IAS to lack of river connectivity, contamination, degraded river habitats and droughts. One of the most important tasks is to control and monitor the populations of different species, to understand how different

The city of Girona was founded in the pre-roman Era and has been inhabited since then. It has some of the most impressive historical sites, such as the cathedral, the jewish quarter, the city walls, the arab baths…. The accommodation of the participants is very close to Girona old town, so on the leisure time, the group can visit different emblematic locations. Also, as the city is in the confluence of four rivers, which make it a great place for discovering the natural patrimony. La Sorellona can prepare some activities to discover the city if the participants want to.
Also, we will make a one-day trip to the Cap de Creus Natural Park (1-hour distance) to visit one of the most singular geologic coastal sites, as the wind and the sea made gorgeous cliffs. Cap de Creus holds a great biodiversity, with endemic flora species, and is a great point for cetaceous sighting.

Associació La Sorellona is a non-profit organization. Its objective is to promote appreciation and respect for the natural environment, both among our fellow citizens as a whole and especially among the younger population.
In accordance with this, its central area of action is environmental education, education in leisure in nature, environmental volunteering and environmental awareness campaigns, in the field of biodiversity.
The organized activities are led by professionals from various fields of action, such as educators, naturalists, biologists and technicians in environmental volunteering, among others.
One of the lines of action of Sorellona since its inception has been the participation of work camps for the monitoring of biodiversity, in order to give value to the natural heritage of Catalonia and to bring the young participants closer to the most common techniques of the study of biodiversity.
In addition to developing an educational task, Sorellona is dedicated to making stewardship agreements for the management and intervention of ponds. It develops scientific studies and actions for the improvement of continental aquatic habitats. It is also a partner of the NextGeneration project “GiroNat”, in which it develops tasks for the renaturation of the blue infrastructure of the city of Girona, among other actions.
