At this project you will make an important contribution to the conservation of the Lüneburg Heath. The Lüneburg Heath is a large heath, geest and forest landscape in northern Germany. At its heart are a large number of heath areas, which are threatened by the spreading forest landscape. One of these threatened heath areas, you will be working on, is the Schwindebeck Heath near the village of Schwindebeck. It has a spread of only a few hundred metres between the adjacent forests, but stretches for kilometres on sandy paths. The Schwindebeck Heath was a military training area until 1990, when British tanks turned it into a sandy moonscape. Since then, painstaking work has succeeded in revitalising the beautiful heathland. In order to ensure this success in long term, the emerging natural reforestation (succession) must be pushed back every year in order to preserve the heath as a sun-exposed habitat for many heat-loving animal species. Therefore, your main task will be to remove all the young pine and birch trees from the area, as well as to load up the biomass and take it away. The other heathlands where you will be working alongside Schwindebeker Heide are also all located in the joint municipality of Amelinghausen and therefore close to your accommodation.
Your work will make an important contribution to preserving the heathland habitat, which is so important for heat-loving insects and reptiles.
You will be working from Tuesday to Friday in the first week and from Monday to Thursday in the second week.
You can find information and photos of your working area Schwindebeck Heath here: https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/natur/sehenswuerdigkeit/4905/soderstorf-schwindebecker-heide.html (unfortunately only in German)
